Question

Found it sitting next to the factory ECU in my MY95 WRX RA.

It's tapping off the four ignition output lines and then outputing four (presumably tweaked) signals. There's a dial on the front marked 'channel'. The other input is from a momentary switch installed next to my handbrake. When I power the car up, the power and h-byte lights come on... and pressing the switch extinguishes the h-byte light only whilst I'm holding it down. Freaky.

The switch is just installed next to the handbrake, it isn't driven by it. I might have to put a logic analyzer on it. So long as it isn't advancing my ignition it's OK

The large chip top right looks like an engine map chip..
could be totally wrong but it looks like a remapped chip installed..

Probably done in Japan on 100RON fuel so I'd get it checked as it might be running lean on uk fuel.

It is a 27c256 eprom, but not for remapping the engine.

But it could be a crude piggy back ignition controller. Does it only connect to the ignition lines?

You're going to like this.

It is indeed (not antilag!) but launch control.

I would try (for a giggle) holding the revs at around 4000rpm and pressing the switch to see what happens, twiddling the channel would probably change the RPM cut speed.

I beleive it's what is shown on this page http://www.autospeed.com/cms/A_0161/printArticle.html brought to you by the power of google.

Switch is probably best setup as a clutch activated switch.

I couldn't get it to do anything. Perhaps it's not mapped?

Have you tried to see what the rev limit was with the button pressed and the car stationary?

That would be my first thing to try actually.

The autospeed article talks about something else to do the 35º retard of the ignition, the Accela is described right a the end.

By "Misfire ring" on the gridsite, I would say that's possibly rotational ignition cut. IOW it cuts alternatiing cyclinders on each cycle.
