What does a dodgy wheel bearing sound like?

Is it a squeaking sound which evolves into an occasional knocking noise which then turns into an occasional low grinding/whining sound? This all started a few weeks after it (98 UK) had a clutch and flywheel change. The CV boots have been checked, as have the the driveshafts and wheel alignment.

So what could it be - can anyone help? I'm at the end of my tether with this as I can't see any clues and I've had the brakes apart aswell but no joy!

Wheel bearings tend to be a low rumbling / grinding noise when they start to fail.

I have this on my Type R as well! Sounds like it comes from the front wheels and is as you described (esp noticeable when crawling through town traffic). I just assumed it was a diff related noise?

not sure this will help but i have a similar problem on my 93 wrx
i was told its not the wheel bearing but the noise is the same but can only be heard if i turn the wheel to the right slightly or more, but then sometimes there is no noise getting worried now as no one can shed any light on the matter.
