I've currently got a ramair panel filter, is there any gains to be had from an induction kit - apart from the noise?

Ramair might damage your MAF, thats why Prodrive dont use them as part of their upgrade on 99 and 00 MYs...as the hot film sensor is too sensitive to contamination,

Question

Sunil, SJL,

I have a Ram Air panel in mine. Twas in there when I bought it. Could the MAF prob be the reason that it is not always that quick in third at 70. eg at 70 in fifth bang it in to third and think oh, my old Cav could have kept up with this. Seems very tempramental. It's a MY96.

Or am I driving it wrong. Change down, hold, hold, then boot.

Checking out boost gauges as well. (just in case.)

Question

Is the Pipercross cone filter a good, safe filter to use?

I've heard if it shakes around it can break a wire element in the air intake?

I love the sound and would like one.

Thanks, Scotty.

I've had a pipercross cone/induction kit on MY99 for 20000 miles - no problems. Had MAF sensor etc checked at 15k everything as normal.

I used to run ITG and that HASNT CAUSED ANY MAF PROBLEMS THAT I KNOW OF.

I run HKS and that is fine and dandy too.

Sith, why do you feel you need to change down?, by doing so you dump a lot of the boost you are otherwise holding and hence maybe thats why you dont get the reaction you expect? Check the relative boost levels.

I dont think the MY96 has a hot film sensor so filter oil contamination wasnt an issue on the earlier cars.

Cheers Sunil. Looks like I might need to modify my driving a bit. It's my first Turbo car.

I changed down because 5th and 4th weren't going to be quick enough. ( I was having a bit of fun.)

I guess the boost takes a little while to build then. I imagined that changing into 3rd would have been sufficient for instant boost as this would have put it at over 4k revs.

When you say to check my relevant boost levels I don't understand what you mean. I am looking to get the gauge after pay day.

Do you or anyone else have tips for turbo driving to get the best of the performance?

Thanks,

P.

Sith,

When I am about to overtake a car and want to do it fast I drop down a gear and while I am waiting 3-4 seconds for the oncoming traffic to pass I push the revs up and down a few times (say 4-4500) to build up boost then floor it and it goes like stink.

Much faster and better than dropping down and going!

The Ver 5 MAF is extra sensitive. The last time I over oiled my K&N Panel filter, it totally killed my MAF. And cleaning it with carby cleaner did not revive him.

My friend with a Ver 5 STI also killed his MAF when he used a HKS pod filter (Green element). It appears that the MAF is really sensitive to changes in airflow, oil and particles. I've now opted for standard airbox with cold air induction via cold air box from bumper.

For you guys with Links, count yourself lucky that you can totally chuck the MAF and essentially shorten the track from induction to Turbo which should yeild some HP.

Having said that, I was running for about 10K miles with the K&N panel filter wo any problems. Therefore, as long as your filter is not too oily and has sufficient filtration capabilies, your MAF will be able to tolerate it.

BTW, I notice that an induction kit (open pod type filter) leans out the A/F readings. Any idea if this is detrimental to the engine's longivity?

Cheers

Pre 99 models used hot wire MAF.
MY99/00 use the film type - very prone to
contamination - not sure why they changed it.

Boys and Girls

Am I reading this right - An air filter gives u more boost and power? - would have thought the difference was marginal - even the kev boy racer brigade people understand this

I only put a filter on for the noise - I have an sti5 and it certainly did not give me any extra punch - but then I have a few other 'minor' bits and pieces on my car - including a Link.

Ah well... I can always live in a fantasy that my air filter DOES... give me noticecble performance improvement - but then I'd have to commit suicide for being a total dimwit -

Its only Gary that think it gives noticeable gains!

I thought u were a boy racer Steve?

AFAIK a induction kit just helps a little Uwith the breathing so a bit here, a bit there, a bit of synergy and Rawles your uncle and Links yer ECU

Thought the sun(ilp) always shone in Croydon....

Friendly help with the torque settings on your valve caps - 100 foot pounds (honest, trust me).

You are treading on dangerous ground - Carolyn has a pink grille badge on her car - YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED

I can only speak from experiance Maybe its down to WHICH induction kit

FYI
Rolling Road @ Well Lane
Pre-induction kit, cold & wet day - 249BHP
Post-induction kit, warm dry day - 258BHP

....and yes I know it isn't a fair comparison, different days, different weather.... but for £75.....!

Ohhhhhh come on Gary - everyone knows Well Lane doesnt count!

so in reality you could be looking at +/- 50 bhp with Well Lane

Mine had 287lbs torque and 299 bhp standard - added a few bits - link, bpm exhaust, Blitz, dump valve and a VF22 and it went to 277hp and 262lbs torque at Powerstation - perhaps I need to do another Well Lane run - just to give me a bit more confidence in my very slow Scooby

Then again Pipercross is so cheap - me thinks that Blitz and HKS are ripping us off - the designs are pretty basic - then again I could replicate the Pipercross for about 50p and some decent scissor work 'WITH Mi SPONGE'
