Am I just unlucky or is there an inherent weakness in the MY 2000 gearbox?
Having had graunching from 4th to 5th gear in my car after 4000 miles, Subaru eventually agreed to a new gearbox under warranty. When gearbox was removed there was apparently quite a bit more damage than a faulty synchro hub.Now a few weeks later and car just about to have 7.5K service, I have exactly the same symptoms. I do not maltreat the car and the graunching happens at 4000 revs up.Any comments welcome.

See if you can get a replacement car from Subaru. Just let me go get my Auto Express......

...Hmm can't find it at the moment. If I remember correctly theres something called the 1994 consumers protection act (or something along those lines.) Basically if the car is not performing as to it's intened purpose or it has a major fault (eating gear boxes is pretty major.) you can write a letter of rejection asking for another car.

This will lead to a few possibilities. Subaru UK agree that you have an un-acceptable car and replace it.

Offer you a brand new car plus a charge for the milage done.

Or replace the gearbox again and offer you a goodwill gesture for inconvieniance (sp)caused. Normally this is an extened warranty.

My feeling is to push for a replacement car as none should be eating gearboxes in that small amount of milage.

Nice idea, but after some time and 7.5k miles you've no chance of "rejecting" the car. Best you can do is to keep getting it fixed under warranty, or get them to give you a good price on a newer car (or do a straight swap).

Bummer. I know they don't get turbocharged Scoobs in the States, but they do have this wonderful thing called the 'Lemon Law', which basically means if your car was, er, made on a Friday afternoon sort of thing, and suffers all sorts of problems, they have to give you your money back/exchange the car (can't remember exact details).

This sounds all too familiar to me. I've suffered a similar problem with 3rd to 4th on an MY99. I have heard of lots of others too. My second repair has failed and Subaru don't want to know (out of warranty). I'm going to take it to a gearbox specialist to strip it down and find the real problem which the dealer obviously couldn't.

The gearbox felt crap from day one though. My dealer even told me that there was nothing wrong after the first failure and only took the box off following my insistence. They found a bent baulk ring. Surprise, surprise! I plan to do have this repaired independently in the next week or two, as and when time allows. Then, depending on the outcome, I'll be visiting my solicitor. Drop me a line in a couple of weeks and I'll let you know what the specialist found.

I cannot understand why Subaru can't solve a stupid problem like this. It really shouldn't happen and it has all gotten very tedious and second-rate.
