Jason

I asked the same question some months ago.

Try doing a search on "intercooler protector" on this BBS. It's been covered a few times before.

Incidentally, when I asked, the concensus was to forget about a protector and persevere with a cocktail stick for fin repairs.

If you DO decide to by one, let us know what effect (if any) it has on your car's performance.

Rich

(BTW my particular thread was titled "140 mph insects" if it helps your search.)

Question

Has anybody used an intercooler protector - I seem to be forever picking sticks, flies and stones of my (now damaged) intercooler.
Does the protector restrict air flow?
Do they protect it?

Unhappy

It can, depending on design, severly restrict airflow.

I fitted the GGR intercooler protector about 6 months ago. I have noticed no loss in performance, the mesh is a doddle to fit and it looks good as well!

.... now..... how do I fit this bloody radiator protector mesh.........

Question

Spikey

1. How much?

2. Does it bolt on to the intercooler itself (and if so doesn't that mean that any bits that do get into the intercooler are a ba$t@rd to remove) or does it fit on to the underside of the bonnet?

Hi Jason

I currently have one on order from Scoobysport - I've heard varying reports as to whether there is any loss in power. I was also getting fed up using a cocktail stick every weekend.

Might be worth considering using the protector in conjunction with one of Mike Ferries' (BladeRnr) splitters (that's what I'm doing). The theory being that any slight reduction in air flow through the protector would be counteracted by having a more even flow of air across the whole surface of the intercooler.

I know a few people run with this, so I'll post up my findings when I get everything fitted.

Chris

Cool

I fitted a intercooler protector from power Engineering and have found no down sides at all.
I do have one of Blade Runners splitters, and my car pulls like a train!
There has been no damage done to the intercoooler since it was fitted 11 months ago, basically it does what meant to do.
Worth it IMHO

Regards
Rob

Haven't fitted the intercooler protector yet, but I have just put on one of Mike's splitters. There is a noticeable improvment above 4000 RPM - car pulls really strongly. Highly recommended.

1) Fair enough (so what excuse do you find to eat and drink too much??)

2) We used to do those things, but several years ago got very wise and now s0d off skiing every Christmas - do as we like, no need to be guilty about which relatives we have to vist on which day, guaranteed snow, eat and drink too much but go and work it off skiing after!!

I fitted one of BladeRnrs Splitters as well last week - seems to give it a little more 'punch' about 3000 revs - do you think we all imagine its such a difference?? - who cares anyway - I like the face !!!

let me know when you've fitted that scoobysport protector.

Jason.
Isn't that the turbo?

Oh, and as for i/c protectors, wire mesh from B&Q is also known to be fairly effective, and only costs a fiver!

Stef.
