APEX AFC and Boost controllers

Hi,
Does anyone have any experience of using the APEX Fuel Controllers and Boost Controllers ?
I'm currently discussing my options in taking my engine development further, but I've been recommended to fit APEX fuel and boost controllers so that I can run high(er) boost (upto 1.3 bar) for competition and low boost for road use.
Apperently I've to buy these things to reduce my chance of detonation or something, and to ensure the engine maps the correct amount of fuel for the new higher boost.
Does this sound right, or am I just being taken for a ride ?
Advice would be appreciated before I shell out for these things.
