I've just read an alarming report by a company called Ecutec where they have tested a standard 2000MY car fitted with an AE 802 ECU, and it only made 202 BHP at the flywheel! when they fitted the earlier AE 801 ECU power jumped up to 217 BHP, they also state that the 802 has a completely different map which amongst other things runs richer.
Maybe this explains why my 2000MY has never felt as quick as the demonstrator vehicle we drove before ordering ! even my son thought it wasn't as quick !
If this is true (can anyone else confirm this)then do we have a case against Subaru for selling a product that does not perform as advertised..I think the advertised figure for my car was 218 BHP, and 202 is way outside any allowable tolerance. Considering I have had continuing problems with both clutch and gearbox, this is the final straw.
I think the Trade Descriptions Act, and Unmerchantable Quality spring to mind !! Any comments guys ?

Hm...

Its pretty much acknowledged that the MY00 Scoobs were not quite as good as the MY99 scoobs due to the ECU maps, but I hadn't heard the power was down by, what 10%

Quite a few have swopped the MY00 ecu for an My99 one and been pleased with the results.

I too have wondered about this although a company who sell threir ecutek remap have a my2000 with no mods rated at 230bhp on the scoobynet dyno charts so its all a bit dubious to me.

The my99 maps are a bit more lively. Rather than trying to build a case against Subaru, it would be far cheaper to source a my99 ECU.....or get an EcuTek remap which (I assume) most UK tuners would base on the earlier maps anyhow.

there are 3 different ECU's for MY99/00 cars as standard.

it could be that the 230bhp car , was a car with an earlier ECU.

the earlier , black and brown label ecu's , are the best for standard/ish cars.

iirc, the later greens run richer , more retarded and have a better low octane map so are considered safer , especially if the car is getting bigger mods , such as turbo , boost controllers etc before getting mapped properly.

my own car had a green and was gutless so changed to a black and went much better.

Thanks guys, but it will cost to chamge to an earlier ECU, and you're then into dodgy territory re Insurance, i.e. it is no lomger standard as it left the factory, and I've been down this road before. As soon as say you've changed anything they won't Insure you. The bottom line is, the ....... thing should perform as it is supposed to !

i'll have a AE801 going shortly as i am after a Tek 2 and i also have the standard AE802, to put the car back to standard if needed. The results are excellent in changing from a AE802 to a AE801 it was like driving a different car, let me know if you are interested.

I managed 204 BHP at PE with my old MY00 nearly two years ago with a AE802. From new the car was rubbish, as you say the demo car I tried (MY99) was a flying machine. It was gutless and hesitated all the time.

I was so annoyed with the car I took it to the dealers and told them I wasn't going to collect it until it was fixed. 2 weeks later they still had the car and was full of excuses. They even showed me a letter from IM, which was a load of bull****. They changed loads of things, but the car was still the same.......Utter pants.

I posted on here at the time about it, then someone called Floydd suggested trying a MY99 ECU. A friend had one in his garage (left over from a PPP upgrade) so I took to the dealers and asked them to fit it. Instantly the car was transformed, and the rest is history..... Do a search on here for "hesitating bag of ****e" or "MY00 hestition"

I would strongly recommend you changing it for a AE801 or a AE800 (quite rare) or visit someone for a TEK remap...... I since bought a RB5 WR, sold the PPP and fitted a John Banks Tek 2.5 (running a AE802 ECU) which is so much better than the PPP

A AE801 / 800 should cost you around £150 on here mate. Put a post in the wanted section.

Hope this helps, Phill

Do you need to have your key re-coded if you change the
ecu.

You don't need the keys re-coded on a MY 99 / 00.

The Insurance company wouldn't be able to tell, if the ecu was remapped. My JB Tek 2.5 runs the same boost as a PPP ecu.

Phill

PS My AE802 ecu reports as a AE801 on select monitor and delta dash, as that's what I wanted

For anyone with an AE802 wishing to change to an 800/801, I have a TEK 1 for sale which is basically the same maps as the 800/1 with some minor corrections. Only £150 outright.

Crikey, I bet the chap with this RR report was upset

'00MY, no modifications 101 201 bhp @ 6400 rpm 190 lb/ft @ 4290 rpm'

Probably made him look very carefully at the ECU's he had in his MY99 and MY00's cars.

Lol, 200 BHP and 190 Lb torque is pretty pants

Phill

PS It's hard to believe this little trial had such an impact

So what's in that mail then? Enquiring minds want to know!

;-)

Edited to say I have a standard MY00. It was the last 4-door unregistered I could find. It has no hesitation and is plenty fast enough! When it was into Listers for servicing some time back, one chap commented how quick it was. I haven't taken up the carpet to look at the ECU but am quite happy to live with it as it is.

I was of the opinion (as someone further up the thread has already effectively said) that these later models ran richer for longevity <shrug>.

I have an oct'2000 turbo. Many people have commented on how well it performs, even a mate who used to own a p1 was surprised by how well it pulled.

It is pants below 3000rpm but as soon as it gets past 3000 off she goes. The cold whether has made 4th gear feel like 3rd, and 2nd is awesome at the moment.

I let a guy who had a ppp'd my01 bugeye take it for a spin a while back, i think he was very shocked by the performance as standard for the old classic. It felt more alive than his.

Power Engineering:-
00MY, no modifications 146 230 bhp @ 6460 rpm 217 lb/ft @ 3340 rpm
Draw your own conclusions.

These are the figures from my old car which was on a W plate and had the original ECU. The car I test drove was an S reg car and as other people have said was a flying machine. My car never felt quick to me but I thought it was my imagination until all the threads about hesitating piles of sh!te started to appear on here. Thats the reason I went along to the Rolling Road day Chins organised at Power Engineering, I wanted to see how much power it had. Still can't believe the figures, in the two years I owned it I was never happy with the performance. Oh and the guy operating the rolling road informed me the car was detting even though it was running on Super Unleaded.

I remember it would often kangeroo at low revs at part throttle and would always seem to be holding back when you floored it.

No idea what happened to it after I sold it to Culverwells in East Sussex, would be very interested if anyone bought a car from them with the numberplate W*** PPD

Floyd and Babber,
I'm obviously missing something, what's funny about it ? unless it's just that it's old news to you experienced Scooby nuts. Anyway here's something to laugh about, rang my Insurance Company (Norwich Union direct) to check that I would be O.K. to switch the ECU to an 801, and despite explaining that it was a standard Subaru part etc. they said absolutely not, and if I did change it I would not be covered. That would have been good if I'd had a biggy !! be afraid, be very afraid ! I have since written to them to complain, and plead my case. I'll let you know the outcome.

Not laughing at you Chaddy, but the irony of history/story connected with the 801/2's.

Why did you tell your insurance company that you were replacing a std ECU with another std ECU? Are you stupid? Do you tell them when you replace the NUL petrol with Optimax, greenstuff break pads, the latest superduper oil? Will your insurance company give you a refund for lower performance which your 802 gives you, if not why should they complain if you get std quoted power with an earlier ECU?

Get a life

Floyd,
Are you for real ! the reason I told the Insurance company was precisely because of the answer they gave me ..if I had an accident with the (in their eyes) non standard ECU, they wouldn't have paid out.. DUH! like I said before I've been down this road before .. and they DON'T pay out.. Wise up, all you idiots who think you can fool Insurance companies..a friend of mine is an Insurance investigator.. and they are not stupid..unfortunately!!

Chaddy chill out m8! all Floyd was saying Was that the two ecu's are Subaru parts, and there is every possibility that an early ecu could have been fitted on a later model car from the factory!! Therefore you are not defrauding the ins company by not telling them! There is absolutley no way would they be in a position to say that the wrong ecu is fitted

Hmm,

Or put the AE801 ecu in the AE802 case, that way they wouldn't have a clue. If you have an ECUTEK upgrade they can make the ECU read whatever you fancy on a select monitor

My insurance company told me that "As you've declared Mods (i.e. Stainless exhaust and been loaded for it) your free to do whatever mods you want, apart from change the pistons " HELLO

Thanks Phill

misty,
At the risk of getting silly, you are totally wrong in your assertion that the earlier ECU could have been fitted at the factory, by definition it is the EARLIER ECU, and from a specific change point the later part would have been fitted. I agree that logically & morally your right, but Insurance companies just go by the letter of the rules, and if they say they won't pay out ..they won't pay out, no matter how much you or I think there wrong ! I'm not making the rules, I'm just trying to avoid falling foul of them.

Hi Chaddy,

Just to add my pint if you don't mind. There is absoluetly no way on earth any insurance assesor (doesn't matter how thourgh he is) would find out a AE802 has been replaced with a AE801 it is impossible as even Subaru will not probably know which one was fitted when the car was produced. There is no way it will even show up on the select monitor at a Subaru dealer, at the end of the day it is a standard subaru E.C.U. you will have done nothing wrong at all (If you are interested i will have one for sale very shortly and belive me you will not be dissapointed, it will take about 10 minutes to have it up and running.I am getting a custom ecutek map on my AE802 so that will solve that problem, and even that with 280 bhp will not show up on a Subaru select monitor.

James.

P.S can't wait untill the new year.
