Under the steering column there is the facility to reset and read ECU faults (By plugging the connectors together)

Do you know whether the car had been previously modified? Check to make sure the pipe from the 'nipple' on the turbo outlet goes to the 3 port solenoid in front of the drivers side suspension turret(Behind Airbox) The bottom of the solenoid should go back to the bottom of the black chamber between airbox and turbo, the remaining pipe should be connected to the turbo Actuator (Wastegate) Also in this pipe there should be a small restrictor.

Cheers

On this MY the restrictor is in the pipe to the air intake expansion box. NOT the pipes to the Turbo or Actuator/Wastgate.

It sounds like the solenoid is stuck closed or the pipes from/to is are block with oil.

Stick your head under the bonnect and open the throttle by hand. As the throttle/butterfly comes of it's resting position the Boost Control Solenoid should start ticking (on drivers side strut top)

scott.t, when the solenoid ticks, does this mean that it is blocked? or this is what it should do?

Ticking is good.
Silence when throttle open is bad.

However, really loud ticking can also mean bad or that it's rubber mounting bushes are shot.

I have heard of some ECU failing in this area in particular the ealry one (which a W6 is). The Solenoid drive cicuit packs up altogether.... Solution = New ECU or a Dawes valve to by-pass the solenoid.

If fitting a Dawes or a Bleed Valve then you really need to have a boost gauge fitted as a minimum.

The Standard W6 ECU boosts to 11.47psi, with fuel-cut set at 14.57psi.
You could run a Dawes set to 13psi without too much of a problem.

Get a Z4 it's alot better and also boost to 12.7psi rather then 11.47psi.

Are you sure the solenoid is plumbed in correctly?

Top feed should go to the turbo compressor housing
Middle should go to the wastegate actuator
Bottom should do to the inlet resonator in the engine bay, and be fitted with small restrictor

It has a fith injector yes but AFAIK it is not used on the road car.
I have fitted a Z4 in a 93WRX RA before and also mapped it to 16.5psi without any issue.

If it is really a WRX RA then the W6 ECU is the wrong one anyway. I think a 93 RA should have a W9.

There are no 'performance map' differences between a W6 and W9. Although the W9 is slightly newer with the Knock Correction maps in the usual/later location (W6 and U8 are earlier and have different map locations).

The fuel/ignition/boost maps between a W6 and W9 are identicle.
A Z4 is much better/smoother and gives more boost.

fuel cut is 15.something (15.34?) psi on z4 which will spoil your fun.

Put a post in 'Wanted' or get in touch with Grade A Subaru breakers or TownEnd Garage.

Don't let them bluff you with another ECU tho'. It's a Z4 you want not a W6, U8, 2C or W9

Certainly not a V5, V9 or 1C as these are from WRX Wagons

Under 15.34psig as you will initiate fuel cut as Pavlo has said. Probably need to set it to about 14.5psig

Take a piccie and we may be able to tell you what it is. Are there any markingd on it.

It may be a good map, it may be a Jap map which isn't good on UK fuel.

2 of the wires coming out of the ECU will go to location labelled 'J1' on the board. If you join these 2 wires together it will run the standard Z4 12.7psi map rather then the additional and at present un-known map.
