Unhappy

Can YOU help? On full throttle my`97 WRX STI IV Type RA feels like its hitting the rev limiter at 5500 rpm. When not at full throttle, it goes all the way to 8000rpm in all gears. Problem just happened, otherwise still drives like a dream. Normal Esso super etc. Any ideas out there? Thanks for your time. Cheers, Roger

Roger,

It sounds to me like over-boost. The ECU is programmed to cut fuel if boost is higher than a certain amount. I'd suggest you're hitting this point, judging by the symptoms you explain.

Do you know what boost you are running? You might want to get that checked out and adjusted accordingly.

Regards,
Matthew

Thanks Matt, no I don't know what boost I'm running, I assume the factory setting! But I'll get it checked now, thanks again. (I assume any servicing place can check it? I'm using Park Lane in Alton, or do I need a specialist like Scoobysport/Power Engineering?)

Personally I'd always recommend Scoobysport. Anywhere decent should have the facilities to check it though... might be worth phoning ahead of time just to make sure.

Also I'd suggest getting a boost gauge fitted. A useful diagnostic tool at times like this.

Let us know how you get on...

Matthew

Hi Matt, Roger here again

Thought you might be interested in my solution.

Pete Croney (Scoobysport)gave me advice over the phone to clean out some pipes (north of the air filter) with brake cleaner aerosol and it worked. He said oil vapour was contaminating some sensors afetr a recent service. Cheap & cheerful result.

Cool

Roger,

Maybe you would be interested in the SIDC FAQ, which details this fix as well as tons of other useful info.
