WRX problem.....
#1
A work colleague has imported a 92-93 model WRX but it seems down on power.
The turbo doesn't seem to come in until around 3,700 revs and then seems to either dip or cut out at 4,500 revs before coming back in again.
Personally, I reckon it feels only about 80% the power of a MY96 UK car. Any thoughts on what the problem could be? Equally, does anyone know of a dealer who can service/rolling road test the car in range of Stockton/Middlesbrough?
If you could email him off-line with any thoughts at: Phong_Ly23@hotmail.com
Cheers

I've heard of a few cars of this age suffering similar problems. In some cases a good service with new plugs etc did the trick
However, I have heard of a few ECU's needing replaced, as they had developed a fault, and would only run intermittantly on boost. Quite expensive for a new one, and even 2nd hand ones aren't that cheap!

I was one of the ones who had to replace an ECU!!.
When I collected my MY93 WRX it was well obvious. The car would pull, but the boost would tail off (to 0.6 Bar). It would rev happily but the boost wasn't there.
After we swapped every sensor and switch on the car, we eventually tried a new ECU which cured it instantly, never to re appear.
I was lucky, the warranty covered me (for £500) but the total was £870!!.
My advice would be confirm it is the ECU and swap it for an aftermarket one (Link; I wish I had) or a 2nd hand one (Pete Croney).
The best way to do this I would say is to stick a boost gauge on it and see what it's doing. It should be making 0.8 Bar (11 PSI). If not and its an intermittent thing, I would suspect the ECU. Im sure some kind person would let you sub an ECU in to try it.
Anyway, I hope this helps, let me know how you get on, this is about the 4th MY92/93 WRX I've heard of with the same symptoms.
Regards Richie.

OZ - Sorry to hear of your mate's problems
Richie - What is the model code on your car ?
Is it a GC8Axxx or GF8Axxx ?
The reason I ask is that in the "Training WRX" book (Oh no, not again I hear in chorus ), they say that the earliest cars suffered from electrical problems.
It is not specific, but maybe they are talking about the ECU (?)
I would suggest taking the car down to Pete or PE for them to take a look.
Does connecting the diagnostic plugs together unearth any error codes ?
Thanks
Gavin

There were no error codes apparant at all with this problem which was suprising.
We tried resetting the ECU at first but to no avail, changing it was the answer.
My model code is GC8A48D.
