Do I need a new Cluch?
#1
I have a '96 STi, never noticed a problem with the cluch until I tried doing a full bore start in the dry. Not much progress, high revs and a nasty smell
Later tried a simmilar start in the wet, no problem, took off like a rocket.
Is it possible to overcome the cluch with a too vigerous start or has the previous Japanese owner shagged it?

Alan,
Having just replaced my WRX clutch, all the investigations into WRX/STI clutches particularly pre98 revealed a general concensus that the standard clutch is very overworked in this car.
Essentially the clutch in your (and Mine) car is the same as a UK spec clutch. Bad when you consider the difference in outputs. I ended up burning the thing out completely with a few heroic starts and now I've got a competition clutch (see other clutch thread -"Clutch Problems" or similar) to ensure that it doesn't happen again in a hurry.

P.S I kinda miss the smell though!
