Hi Dave
For the gearbox/front diff, we use Silkolene SYN Tran 5. Its a fully synthetic motorsport lubricant which meets API GL-5 and is rated 75w/90, as recommended by Subaru. The gear box takes 4.0 litres on a manual Turbo.
For the rear diff, we use Silkolene BOA 90 LS. This has special frictional properties for Limited Slip diff's, again meeting API GL-5 and with a grading of 85w/90 as required by Subaru. The rear diff takes 0.8 litres.
Silkolene 'box lubricants are used by most WRC teams.

Pete,
My 30k service is approaching and I was wondering if using the Silkolene oil in the gear box makes any noticeable difference, in your opinion?
Also, does the gearbox and front diff share the same oil (ie if you crunch the gear box, bits will get in the diff)?
Cheers,
Paul.

Mr Strong....
Changing the transmission fluid wont have any adverse affect, I dont think you will notice any improvement. The fluids are the same "rating" and thus the viscousity will be the same. The only advantage will be the temperature aspect. I believe the new fully synthetic (branded) fluids can cope with harsher conditions.
Yes the diff and gearbox share the same fluid and yes bits can move between the two.
A tip (as used by many Group N rally teams): Put gauze between the two sections (in case the diff or gear blows). This will allow the fluid to pass but stop any bits.
Cheers,
J.
