Gearbox noises
#1
Hi all....
Something I have just noticed on my STI IV.....
When I reverse at slow speeds and then dis-engage the clutch..so that the car is rolling backwards under its own weight... I hear a sort of whining/grating noise..like messing gears....I know there is no synchro on reverse... but I have never heard this noise before.... there is plenty of transmission fluid in the box...
Does anyone else have this noise on there car? Is something shagged on mine ? Is this normal?
Cheers,
J.

Hi Firefox,
The impreza has a constant mesh gearbox, so when you are disengaging the clutch while coasting backwards, the motion of the car is still rotating the geartrain via the driveshafts. Since reverse gear is straight-cut, it is normal for it to make some noise.
My car has just started doing this in 1st gear, which is more sinister. I've taken it back to my dealer twice, and an IM tech. rep inspected it last time. He reported verbally that 'they all do that', and that there wasn't a problem. I'm still waiting for their written report, but I don't think I'll leave it there. My car certainly didn't do this when new, so I can't see why it should suddenly start unless there is a problem with gearbox bearings, gears, or something else.
Regards,
Alex

Alex,
Thanks for the reply....
I spent this morning checking.. listening.. playing.... checking the noise out..I spoke to three people about it.... and they said it was nothing to be worried about.... I was just suprised how I never noticed it before...
Anyways... I can smile again.. and continue down my path of modifications..
Cheers,
J.
