A friend adviced me that if I want my car set up for drag, then a lightened flywheel should not be fitted.Lightened flywheel is more suited for track, engine braking, etc, etc.
Comments anyone.Car is used for daily driving and occasionally do drag for fun.No track work.
Thanks.

A lightened flywheel will not really work properly on a car used for normal driving, as it will upset the engine balance and running, causing it to run uneven, feel lumpy and even stall out if machined too light. You will not gain anything, in fact loose more power having to keep the engine revving higher, to keep it ticking over, as the engine is set up with the weight of the flywheel to keep it turning over between each engine cylinder power stroke. Save your money and spend it on fuel enjoying the way the original engine designers created it.

Thanks for the advice.I am thinking of upgrading the clutch and use the factory flywheel. This way I would say is more suited for daily driving.I drove a friend's WRX with lightened flywheel and aftermarket clutch and found that the rpm do drop faster during shifting.

depends on how light you go........we modify std flywheel to around 8kgs with no side-effects.......quicker spool, and acceleration as a result and perfect idle....

I use an aluminium flywheel which weighs 4 Kg. compared with the standard at near 12 Kg. I have no problems with normal road use, the engines idles just as it did before and is just as smooth too. I had to get used to it originally when letting the clutch in from standstill, but I don't even notice it anymore. The advantages are as stated above.

I read it in one of the Aussie forum that lightened flywheels are better suited for track work due to better engine braking but for drag racing, the OEM ones are better suited as less rpm drop between shifts.
Comments anyone? For me is car is daily use and ocassionally traffic light drag racing.
