Whilst my car was in for the MOT (which it flew through - phew!!) I noticed whilst they were underneath the car a leak from the gearbox area.

Having taken in to a mates garage today to put on the ramp it has become apparent that the problems are two seals as follows :-

Tail shaft oil seal
gear change oil seal

The car is a WRX STi Type R V3
I live in the Wakefield / Huddersfield area

First things first -

1) where can I get these seals from
2) how much will they be
3) how long would they take to fit
4) how much am I looking at paying a garage to do
5) does anyone know of a garage they would like to recommend
** ALSO POSTED THIS IN GENERAL TECHNICAL **

I have bought some more gearbox / diff oil from Halfrauds today to top it up whilst I find the above answers but obviously this is a short term fix.

Any help much appreciated

Cheers

Propshaft seal is : 806735210.
Gear selector is: 806718100.

Both Gen Scoob numbers,But must say, not normal items to leak, you have not got the box overfilled have you? as the oil is rather clear and not easy to read.
I only had mine change due to a box rebuild, not due to failure.

Not overfilled mate, right on minimum line. just topped it up this morning. Gonna monitor it on a weekly basis and see how much it is leaking.

Thanks for the reply and numbers

There was evidence of some oil leaking from my top seal when I dropped the box out to change the clutch.. but not enough to really worry about as it had done 124k miles at the time just seemed like normal weaping..

I don;t think you will get to the top seal without dropping the box.. but could be wrong... might be able to undo gearbox mounts and let the box move downwards on the engine mounts.

The rear seal I presume you just need to remove the rear shaft which would be best to drain the oil first, but the shaft is easy enough to get out.

I'll have a look to see if I have a picture of my gearbox which should show normal leakage IMHO..
