Question

Probably just being paranoid but when my MY2000 is stationary the revs plumet and rise for a minute or so before evening out. Is this normal?

If this occurs when the engine's warm you might want to check the MAF sensor. Esp if it fluctuates continuously for any period of time. If it's only first thing in the morning then prob just auto choke.

Question

Probably a very dumb question but what is the MAF sensor and how do I check it?

MAF - is the Mass Airflow Sensor and is located or should I say connected just behind the Airbox. If you look at the airbox you will notice the MAF sensor housing is bolted directly to it. They don't always show failure but you may want to check the ECU cel history for a MAF failure code.

hope this helps.

Question

Is this easily done or am i looking at getting a proffessional to look at it, as i would not know exactly what to look for. It happens mostly when the car is warm.

Cheers for the help

Certainly sounds like MAF to me. To check the ECU for errors, click here for help. But I doubt there'll be anything there, as it could be a failing MAF (ie. not totaly shagged ).

For the sake of £62+VAT, you might as well get a new one, just to be on the safe side. Part number is 22794AA010 - Meter CP-AIR Flow.

Regards,

Ade.

u dont say if you've got an aftermarket dumpvalve on there ? if so, I'd also check that too -as they are known to cause bad idling.
but it's probably MAF. I think if you disconnect it & it idles properly, its definatly that....

Yep, stalling is another symptom of failing maf. Usually occurs when slowing for a corner, or at lights.

all the car's i've had that experienced this behavior were found to be due to air in the engine coolant system. I know on my old MR2 the choke mechanism fed straight off the antifreeze temp. If there were air bubbles the you would experience some rev fluctuation at idle when the air passed the choke hence the hunting.

Cure:
When the car has been standing for a while (few hours), undo the radiator cap and release and excess air in the system (you should hear a hiss sound). Re-tighten and off you go. Quick and simple if this cures the problem.

Hope this helps.

not on a scooby tho !
no such manual/auto choke. it's all done by the ECU.

only thing that normally happens re:coolent temp. is it goes into a safety mode, coz it doesnt know if it's cold or warm. all fans come on and I believe it puts a CEL up too.

MAF - never had to do it, but start car, and unplug it. if idle drops and becomes erratic then that would suggest that your maf is ok. if theres no difference in idle then that would suggest there is a problem !

There is no after market dump valve, so I,ll give the MAF sensor a check 1st thing 2morrow. Where exactly is it and is it just a question of pulling it out?

Blimey, sounds serious.

Glad you managed to get it checked out, and that it was a simple fix.

On the other matter, I'm trying to round up a few guys with different exhaust systems for you to check out on Sunday. Should be fun.
