Could be a host of things and unable to wave majic wands over the internet creates problems. Many "metallic noises" can sound the same as something else.
Could be timing belt tensioner failed,
Crankshaft run a bearing, causing heavy knock,
Engine overfuelled, burnt hole in piston, or burn side of piston, dropping performance, creating misfire.
I'd sooner get someone local to have a listen, as the guy on the spot can actually hear the problem and not have to make guesses on here, so get in touch with a local garage who does actually "know" scoobs and take it from there. Be much cheaper than guesses.

right, the covers were taken off the cam belt yesterday, the markings on the cogs don't match up, could this be the problem? as well as changing the belt.
the knocking is louder on the drivers side.

if they dont match up, then they've slipped. usually tensioner faliure, but could be something else.
I'd get the whole thing checked out. you could have a bent valve / damaged piston. if they've not slipped enough to cause clash (is this the metalic sound ! ) then u might be lucky. but IMHO this needs a pro!
