Type R DCCD box into MY99 Classic
#1
Hi guys,
have a MY99 classic that I am looking to put a Type R box with the DCCD. Anything I should look out for?? Am planning to fit the box, the rear diff and shafts, the STI instrument cluster with the DCCD indicator lights, the scoll **** and the DCCD ecu. Have heard there are issues relating to the ABS. Is this the case??? Any other issues I shoudl anticipate? All feedback appreciated, Cheers!!

Moray has the system running with abs and both appear fine.
You may have trouble as the rear shafts need the rear hubs and these carry two pot brakes but no abs sensor rings.
Better option would be to have some custom drive shafts made to go with your standard hubs but with the r180 rear diff.
I would consider retaining a normal sti or even P1 rear diff, the P1 rear diff will give you the handling that the R180 does since it is plated, but it retains the standard driveshafts for use with abs and it ha a 4.44 final drive which you will need.
Well done for noticing you need the clocks, most people don't know that.

Cheers for that. I think you have nailed it. The parts haven't arrived yet, but as you said there is no ABS or provision for it on the R180 rear diff so mods will be required to keep the abs. Would like to keep the ABS but also want the extra strength of the 180 so have to see how we go with some bodgy mods. Thanks again.

I can put you in touch with someone who can have custom driveshafts made.
You can fit the R180 rear diff with these shafts and then standard hubs with standard brakes and abs pickups.
failing that stick with the r160.
I know someone who may well be interested in your hubs and driveshafts if the money is reasonable.

my car is a my99 and center gears are 33:30,so the front and rear crownwheels have a different ratio to allow the 4 wheels running at the same speed.
as i am aware all the european models (my 99,00) have that fitting.
so if the dccd has an equal center gear ratio,i must change the rear crownwheel to have the same ratio than front.
some body can confirm?

the type of rear diff makes no difference to the dccd,
you can use whichever drop gears you like so long as the front and rear final drives are the same.
I run a dccd with 1:1 drop gears and a 3.9 final drive with an r180 rear diff.
Moray runs his dccd on a standard r160 rear diff with a final drive of 4.44, his drop gears would also be 1:1.
Not heard of anyone using 1.1:1 drop gears, but since the transfer cases are interchangable between jap and UK, I see no reason why not.
Saying that, have never taken it apart to compare.
think Andy F has, so he may know.
Not an issue here if R160 being supplied too, since it will have a 4.44 crown wheel on rear diff and not a 3.54 of a UK turbo.

berylium,
as I said above,
Uk cars have a 1.1:1 = 33:30 transfer case due to the drop gears being dissimilar.
The rear crown wheel and pinion on a euro trubo is 3.54:1 whereas the front is 3.9.
If you want to fit a dccd with 30:30 drop gear ratios, you will need for the gearbox to have 4.44 final drives in it and the rear diff too! which is what is being proposed above.
If not you can leave the gearbox as it is with a 3.9 final drive on the front, and attempt to fit the rear crown wheel and pinion from a sport to your r160 which will have a final drive of 3.9.
As I said, am not sure, but you could always fit the drop gears from a uk transfer case instead of the 1:1 drop gears of the Jap cars.

ok adam,thank you
but your answer involve other questions:
are the dccd drop gears specials,or can i keep the genuine 33:30?
is it easy to find a 3.9 rear crownwheel (r160) in europ?
4.44 is too short for me,i have already a sti gear set

Cannot confirm about drop gears as I havent opened one up, but as moray says, andy f has so he shoulod be able to throw some light on this.
As stated, you can always use a sport rear crown wheel and pinion with your standard gearbox.
If you have sti gears, how comes you retained the standard final drive and didnt fit the sti final drive?
also, unless its a type r, sti ratios are similar if not identical ratio to uk/european ratio.

sti ratio are very differents from oem.
1rst is longer:3.08,2,3,and 4 shorter,and 5th 0.825,11% shorter than wrx. with 4.44,it would be 25% shorter on 5th.
good for rally,not for road,even for track,axcepted with 8000rpm
