The front tyres on my car go flat without having a puncture. At first there seemed to be a slow puncture in the passenger side tyre so i had it checked and no puncture was found, and overnight it whent flat... next day took it to the garage and no puncture could be found... now that tyres been fine... (began to think someones leaking the air pressure from my tyres) until today, the drivers side tyre this morning seemed a bit low.. thought it'd be fine upto work (10 min drive) and then i'd add more pressure at dinner time but on way to work the tyre whent completly flat. i was only doing bout 10mph in traffic when it whent flat..

I assumed it was a puncture.. changed the wheel over and took it to tyre man who couldn't find a puncture... so i've got it back on my car and it seems fine at the mo.

Anyone know why the tyres could be loosing pressure in this way?

Thanks
Franko

Thumbs up

Franko

It's probably either: -

a) Corrosion on the inside lip of the wheel (where the tyre butts up against) this uneven surface causes the air to leak out due to the tyre not seating against a clean flat surface - Tyre co's will remove the tyre, clean the inside of the wheel & replace tyre, job done.

--or--

b) A faulty valve, these can be replaced by a tyre fitting co.

If you go for a) then when the tyre is put back on they will replace the valve for you at the same time probably sorting your problem out. Usual charge is about £5 per wheel.

Good luck

dont know what wheels you have, but there has been an issue on some (classic) scoobs where the rims have become porous.
Hope you find the problem

I had a problem with my Toyos not sealing properly on my OZs and they had to refit them using some white rubbery gunk which sorted the problem.

Have you hit any bad potholes recently? I managed to flatspot all 4 of my alloys a while back thanks to the wonderful state of UK roads and had to top the pressure in the tyres up every other day until I had them all completely reshaped and refurbished, which wasn't cheap

Thanks for the replies guys

Ian atkins: Its been about 2 months since i had new tyres fitted.. so would've expected the tyre company to have got rid of any corrosion but i'll have them checked again.. The valve should be ok as this would show when checking for a puncture..

Beastie- I've got stilauto sr600's fitted... there is a prob with rims on some classic's becoming porous?

Alan B: hmm i had toyos before theses ones... i havn't even checked the make of these tyres bro had em fitted for £70 a piece begining to think it may be the quality of the tyres..
Your sugestion about them not fiting properly on the rim could be the cause but would this not be the same for the rear tyres aswell? the rear ones seem to be fine...

Alex f: i'm runing on a very hard suspension setting... hitting the smallest of potholes is like OUCH... maybe this could be the cause but then it never happened when i had the toyo's on...

The pressure in all tyres seems fine this morning... i'm thinking it probably the tyres not fitting flush to the rim...

Will be letting you know what the cause is once i find it..

Again thanks for your sugestions guys been very helpfull

The porous wheels were the standard caccy 15 inch five spokers fitted to early impreza turbos. Id get the tyres refitted and new valves as mentioned above as a first move.

I’ve had a problem with air leaking from the balancing weight, quite hard 2 see air bubbling out, so it might be worth having a good look when there checking it.

Cheers guys...

Just thought to update... had all the rims etc checked and they seemed fine... so since the last time i had the tyres going flat i'm running the tyre pressure at 40pisses instead of 30-35...
They've been behaving eversince although i think 40psi maybe a bit too much pressure?
