Just had the 60000 mile service and they changed the diff oils. In changing the rear diff oil they found bits of (what look like) the teeth in the oil! The car is a MY00 PPP (no other changes).
I think therefore I need a new rear diff or at least one of the gears. Has anyone else had this problem or heard of it? It's a new one on me and I've been kicking round the BBS for 5 years
Thanks for info
Richard

Does the diff make any noise etc?
Just cos there is metal in there it does'nt mean it won't carry on working for a good many miles.
And I'd doubt a whole gear tooth would even fit through the drain hole!
I've seen some rather alarming amounts of mashed metal come out of Cosworth 4x4 gearboxes, and yet they carry on working fine.

Seen two MY01's recently with this problem, the bits look like watch bracelet straps.
Though some diffs can be repaired, some unfortunately can't (though there are people out there Mark of Lat Perf fame & various others that could source uprated parts)
Of course there's always the 2nd hand route......

Apparently, when they opened it up, they found the diff was completely locked! Don't know how long it's been like that!
Anyhow, a new LSD is going on in place of the original open diff, so it'll be nice to see what effect this has .

Well remembered Nigel! They did a brake test on the car, which involved putting the front wheels on rollers, and locking the rear wheels with the handbrake . In fact I wrote to them (the TÜV - German equivalent of the MOT) and told them if I found any damage I would be claiming it back off them, but this damage has only become apparent now as the diff oil only gets changed every couple of years.
I am getting a letter from the dealership saying that, in their opinion, this kind of damage could only be caused by doing something like what the TÜV did.
Also the dealer thought that all Scoobies have the drivetrain covered to 60000 miles or 5 years - anyone know if this is correct? Then I can claim it back from Subaru...
Cheers

No noises, no clues as to any problem but I'll get it sorted just to be on the safe side.
And I'm not running anything like as much torque through it as you John! (Unfortunately )
Thanks
Richard
