Unhappy

Going from a very slight misfire i now pretty much have it all the time and the car is getting hard to start (at least 3 or 4 trys before it fires and then it struggles to idle before settling down). It then seems to idle fine but under load (any rpm) it misses quite badly.

The plugs are brand new, i have tried the car with other coils and have cleaned the boost solenoid. No difference. I tried the MAF test, i.e. took the connector off and it died instantly... however once it did still idle??? The ecu has a scoobyecu module but this has been in for about a year..... the maps have been changed recently but i am now back on a known good map and the ecu connections all seem ok.

So any suggestions.... anybody got a spare MAF to try (car is a MY93), maybe a spare ecu? The car has the earthing mod too.... Im struggling to see what the problem could be. I have dnbs selmon programme and have checked evrything on the laptop and the figures all look ok .

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Tony.

if you've tried the ign. side then i would suggest it could be fuel related........worth a try??

I was thinking that myself. I was going to buy a new pump and filter anyway so now would be a good time. I have a spare reg too to try. The lambdalink does show lean but i gather that it could do this purely because of the misfire. Not sure if it was a problem with the fuel system if it would be intermittent tho????

Have you checked for air leaks in any of the vacuum tubing surrounding the turbo?

Spray around with some carb cleaner and if the revs rise, you're leaking air.

Cheers ticky... im pretty sure the MAF is ok. The voltages all look sensible. On the way home i'll log this to see if there are any strange spikes etc.... but the load figure (calulated with input from the MAF) also looks ok.

I'll hopefully have a walbro fuel pump soon (Mark?)... and i also have two sets of spare injectors to try. Im just hoping it's not the ecu... just get neverous as i've been trying several maps in it (scoobyecu) . Having said that im hopeful that it isn't that.

Tony.

P.s let me know how you get on with yours.

Hope this doesn't sound silly, but have you checked the coolant temp sensor?
This is used for cold start and also in the load maps......changed mine a few months ago and has cleared lumpy idle, hesitation, and hunting when the engine was cold.

Plug Gaps ? should be 0.65mm if running higher boost.
Cam or Crank Sensor connections and also cleanliness of sensors ?

Ignitor's can also fail (under boost control solenoid bracket)

Dave,

Checked the coolant temp sensor by plugging the laptop in. Temps are fine, fans come on and off at the correct temps etc.

Scott,

Just put new plugs in and gapped them correctly too. Cam and crank sensors are next to look at and a pump should be coming from Mark at some point too. I had heard the ignitors were very reliable.... however i'm going to go thru all the diagnostics manual tommorrow and see what it throws up.

Interestingly after reseting the ecu yesterday (battery disconnected for 11 hours) the car drove fine. It even felt quicker than usual but it did have a bit of trouble starting. Almost died but recovered and then idled fine. So it was just the initial combustion it was struggling with????

Cheers,

Tony.
