Question

I have an sti version 5 (yr98) its not got the red top engine whereas my mates car has a red top engine and his is a version 3.

Does anyone know the difference between a red-top engine and one without a red-top?

Thanks

Franko

If its an STI it should have Red Manifolds, perhaps yours has a standard WRX engine.

Are you sure the paint hasn't come off the manifold (daft question I know)

other than that - check what turbo you have (should be Vf28 IIRC) - if not then your engine may have been messed with or not STI..

Yup the only Sti's with out the Red manafold was the STi version 1, either yours isnt an STi or its had another engine put in at some time.
Have you got any pics of the car ?

As Andy says, all the STi's bar the very earliest had red painted manifolds. It's theoretically possible that all the paint may have fallen off yours, but it's far more likely that either she's had an engine swap, or the car you have is just a normal WRX with some STi badges stuck on.

If your car is a 98MY, BTW, it'd be an STi version 4. The V5's are 99MY

As far as I know ALL version 4 Sti engines have the red cover. If not then most definitely a WRX.

I assume it has the Sti logos on seats and instruments ?

I believe that the manifolds are interchangeable though, so no reason that a silver manifold couldn't be fitted to an STI or a red one to a WRX (correct me if I'm wrong).

I can't think of any reason the manifold would be swapped out except maybe for one with bigger injectors already fitted but if it's possible I dare say at least someone out there's done it for whatever reason.

So it seems it's in no way a definitive way to check, I'm not sure of more accurate ways to check but I wouldn't get too worried just yet.

Isn't there a website somewhere that will tell you the model by entering the VIN ??

Cube.

The turbo is a IHI VF22... and checking that at MRT performance sti's have IHI turbo's? but of course this could have been added to the wrx engine right?
cant find a site that gives info with the vin number even my insurance comp didn't have it on their database.. they had it as a legacy..

Looking at your small picture id say its a WRX.
If it was an STi 4 it should have a sticky out splitter on the front, yours hasnt

If should have the same front end as my car, mine is a UK car with the Prodrive body kit on.....STI 4 bits ti you and me

Get the applied model number from the vin plate and put it on here, its the one under the actual vin number and will start with GC8-----
I can then tell you exactly what car you have.

Andy thank you for displaying my pic too.. You got a nice looking car..

The import sti dont all have the front lip on the bumper.. my mates sti didn't have it he had it added later..

and mines toooo low to have a front lip.. it would hit the floor when coming down hill and onto a strait road..

Paul-M thanks for your input and your right there is a possibilty that the manifold could have been changed.. i'll have to look under the bonnet properly and see exactly whats what..

Thanks

Yep. acording to the data i have, it was manufactured between 9/97 and 3/98.
The second "8" says its a wrx.
And also, its quoted as 280bhp.

The last thing is confuseing because it dose'nt mention anything about "STI" but its listed as 280bhp.

Edited to say that the engine type does tally up with the code.

Confirms WRX and yes they were 280 ps which is why the VF22 was installed, they run slightly lower boost to do it.
