Hi Guys,

Wondering if anyone can shed some light.

i have a my98 type r, which i have been driving for two m onths. It has had a small problem, where at idle after hard drives it over revs.

usual problem i thought (after reading posts) it is the MAF. So i took a trip to Scoobysport who confirmed that although not destroyed the MAF was on its way so replaced it.

After replacement the drive home was a lot better however today, three weeks later after a leisurely drive up the m11 it starts happening again.

3500-4500 revs constantly however now it is permananent. I called out the AA who did the usual, mm, hit it with a spanner and WD40 the idle valve.

after an hour of cleaning everything nothing seemed to work.

i eventually got the car home, however it is very poorly.

is it likely to be the idle valve? i have a normal STI air filter with red cotton insert, no special manifold and the return spring on the accelerator seems to be fine.

anyone had this? recommend a solution.

it is an import is it likely to be the ECU running on optimax? only)

shoudl i remap first, valve first? any ideas on how to isolate?

any help much appreciated!!

Hi Jim,
I had similsr prob where the idle was up to 1900 and stuck there.
When turning off engine, could hear what we thought was the boost solenoid clicking over on shutdown.

Garage swapped out the idle control valve....cured it for 2 months.

Prob returned on a long drive when stuck in traffic...turned off..and swithched off for 10 mins...carried on , still there, then suddenly was ok again after 5 mins.
Not sure what caused it, we thought it may be electrical.
Gave the ISCV elec connector a wd40 spray and cleaned connections.
Added extra earthing points to engine.
Looked at all hoses around solenoid area & found one gunked up.

ok again now. Actually idles better since earth mod.

mmm, very interesting, similar symptons to me, however mine is now permanant, i will try for the idel valve under warranty, change all the hoses and add the earthing mods.

where is the boost solenoid?

Should be drivers side, just forward of wheel arch.
I'll find an SNET link with pic.
I asked about this with my fault, the idle valve was pointed out as my first port of call.

ok here's a link to an earthing mod subject, but also in the first pic, just below where it says "driver strut" (or sumthing like that) is some gubbins, you can see the boost solenoid, along with a couple of other components.
The main one that i found "gunked up" was a smaller hose (that connects into the large hose that runs from intercooler to turbo) (IIRC). and connects into a T piece, and through to the solenoid.
You could try adding a couple of engine earthing wires as in the link. I believe it does run happier.
WD40 the Idle valve elec connector & clean (if not already, every little bit helps and only takes a minute).
Other than that get an idle valve on order.
