WRC Chirping sound?
#1
Has anyone managed to identify what that noise is?
Read through a lot of posts and all of the noises so far identified relate to ALS, dump valves and wastegate chatter...
Chirping is usualy best heard when the WRC Impreza is aproaching a corner and has released the throttle to brake?

So it "IS" waste gate chatter then!!
You can hear wastegate chatter better if you fit an induction kit or fit a VTA dump valve, but it will only give you a flutter sound.
You need to have ALS and no dump valve for full on wastegate chatter for the chirping sound?

Its not wastegate chatter but the pressurised air pulsing back past the compressor wheel. I can set up a dump valve to produce that sound on a normal road car ... depending on mod state, turbo etc, for example the bov on my car cracks at 1.2 bar, below that it stays shut, wrc chirp can definately be heard.

Rebuild schedule on customer Impreza WRC turbos is a maximum of 500 stage kilometres IIRC. If the anti-lag on the electronic cars is turned right up, they're past their best a long time before that!

Without the ALS ... the 'TTL' with no dump valve depends heavily on the turbo (compressor & bearings). AFAIK, Garret should be tough enough to last as long as any other bit of the turbo; MHI (TD stuff) shouldn't fare too badly at all, but will wear; and IHI (VF stuff) won't last long at all.
Basically, unless you really know what you're doing (read 'Bob', etc. ) then a BOV is a very good idea. Same goes for having a BOV but set to 1.2 bar

Bob,
What dump valve do you have that makes this sound?
Does it make this sound only?
I've had Bailey dump valves and Blitz, but took them off after after a while.
I now have a TD05 FE with no dump valve fitted, but it deosn't chirp.
