Whining noise from GB or Tranfer box.
#1
Ive got a 96 Uk spec impeza turbo.
Recently it has developed a whining noise when in motion which increases with speed.
Ive checked the GB oil and it seems clean and to the mark.
Im just wondering if there is a oil level dipstick for the transferbox or can someone recomend a solution.
Thanks.

Check rear Wheel bearings mate. I had leggy that was the same. turned out 2 be o/s rear bearing. Take it for a blast on windey country road and see if it goes when u go round either left or right hand bend

check teh wheel bearing but regret to say this very much sounds like the problem I had namely the main bearing in gearbox is shot
'Rally Colin' fixed mine at a good price, it might be worth giving him a bell and worth a trip up the m4 to reading (as I did from Devon) saving £££s
good luck

I thought my MY99 had a whining box for a while. Only ever showed up after I'd given it what for, but turned out to be low power steering fluid level causing the pump to cavitate. I'd have sworn it was the transmission. So check your PAS level, when cold it should be at least to the max mark, I go a bit beyond now (do a search for it).
