Red face

Ive started to hear a rattling sound appearing on tickover when the car gets warm.It seems to be coming from the drivers side of the engine, possibly around the head.
Cant be heard above tickover, but think it is getting worse.
I have took it to a reputable garage for them to listen, but they werent sure what it was, said it could be piston slap, but to just keep check of it and see if it deteriates.
My car does suffer from mild slap, but thats more of a hollow sounding knocking I think.
If this makes any sense does anyone have any ideas?
BTW, did an oil change 2 weeks ago, with the same silkolene pro-s 10w50

Forgot to say, 93wrx.

Cheers, Rob.

Sounds like it could be dirty injectors.

Run some injector cleaner through and see if that helps.

Unhappy

Your engine will have hydraulic valve lifters (later versions have solid lifters) so, depending on mileage, these could well be your problem. A couple or more may not be pressurizing fully allowing excessive valve clearance. As the oil pressure rises with engine revs. so the problem reduces. They could be telling you it's time for replacement! You need to get a Scoob specialist to have a listen.

OK thanks.
I can handle that, as long as its not goung to blow up on me in the next few days!
I will get a second opinion from a specialist garage.
Cheers, Rob.

Question

John,
If it does turn out to be the lifters, would using a thicker oil help? or is this not a good idea.
Thanks again, Rob.

Thicker oil (depending on exactly how much thicker you go!) could cause problems elsewhere, so it's not really an answer.

If I had to hazard a guess, I'd go with Subman and the dirty injectors. Whatever you do, rule them out as the cause before you go getting the head stripped
