i got my engine cranking now, but im stumped at a problem.

I have only got 1 coil pack on each side of the engine firing. I have rotated the coil packs so i know that they are all OK.

What could it be??

its an MY93 with an STi3 engine incase you needed to klnow, wrx loom is being used. Do two of the coil packs have seperate earths??

Also, how can i know which ones plug into which??

thanks in advance

I don't know whether this applies to the older engines with separate coil packs, but possibly it has a wasted spark ignition system where the coils always fire in pairs even though one cylinder is approaching the top of the exhaust stroke (hence the spark is wasted).

It's a commonly used method in distributerless ignition systems to reduce complexity although I have no idea if it applies but if so it would help explain why your problems are occuring in pairs.

Are you using the entire ignition system from the MY93, or have any bits from the STI crept in?

In that case, I don't understand it at all! Surely it should just work as it used to!! What have we overlooked? Check the wiring for the silly things - missed earths etc...?

Exclamation

Question: Are you going to try and run the STI3 engine using the standard early WRX ECU? The STI3 has the wildest cams of any classic shape car... you may well have problems trying to run this engine with a standard early wrx map.

I am using a scoobyECU to setup a new map capable of running th cames (and 2 bar boost).

im also using coilpacks as i cant see how i could get the twinpack to work.

I have looked into it and am not getting a 12V feed to two of the packs...

2 bar is going to be the limit of the overboost, so actual map will be around 1.7-1.8 bar, but 2 bar sounds better, however the blueprint internals should easily take up to 2.5 aslong as the mixture and timing is spot on.

The scoobyECU is a short term solution until the piggyback ECU can be brought, however i am now recovering from the £2K+ this has cost so far...

Why is the scoobyecu short term??

OE Ecu can match performance of aftermarket ecu's if done correctly..

Whats the difference between a map on a scoobyecu board and a ecutek map apart from the programming process..

Not much.

PS.. anyone else reading I have nothing to do with a 2bar scoobyecu map so dont even mail me for it..

1.8bar peak on scoobyecu still limited by uprated map sensor.

If you think 1.8bar isn't enough, you need to come back down to earth!

I think the more likely outcome of this would be something like a 1.6bar peak in overboost conditions, with 1.5bar held, and even that is assuming a 'good' turbo.

reason for the scoobyecu is shear cost, i have still got to pay for my hoses and PAS parts so i cant afford the £500+ for an proper ECU.

Im going to wait till the car is done before i make any accurateguesses, however what i have mentioned is what i am hoping for, notice the hoping used...

Cool

I guess you mean the ScoobyECU is capable of dealing with a map for 2bar boost. I suspect 2 bar boost would be pushing the STI 3 internals, and the OE map sensor is only accurate up to ~1.6barish IIRC. On the other hand, IIRC, John Banks has run OE internals up in the region of 1.8 bar boost.
