could somebody please help me here, I was driving down the motor way when the car start to make a very odd noise... you know like when you put cardboard in the spokes of your bike wheels as a kid.

The noise is only there when driving, if the car is/was sat idle the noise would stop.... I have no engine check lights on, and the battery dies shortly afterwards.

I have plenty of oil etc

can anyone shed some light on this please.

If you rev the car while stopped does it make a noise or is it only when the car is moving?

Have you checked the alternator belt if the battery is dying? It may have come lose/snapped?

The car is now very dead, makes the noise allll time and stalls itself after two seconds of running, it sounds like two pieces ofr rust metal being rubbed together... The alternator Belt is still in tact and on the car..... Very confused now

Car sounds like a real bag of bolts... take 4 Giant, industrial bolts, stick them in a christmas sized biscuit tin and shake it really hard, and ta da.... you have my engine sound!

could be the big ends which i woould describe as a knocking noise. my engine is big fixed coz of it now, however your description of it sounds alot worse than mine so maybe your crankshaft has gone too. you could hear my knocking when at about 5k revs.

Yep sounds like you've done a main bearing.

Time for rebuild, also if you kept reving it to find out what the noise was its likly you have scoured the crank to and need a new one of those

its normally the third big end thats the problem. more often than not caused by using the wrong fuel

It can still be the fuel. In Australia anyway we have found some variation in the same fuel depending on location and also how busy the Garage is. ie if the place selling the fuel isnt very busy the fuel can degrade slightly over time. I try to buy my optimax at the garage with the quickest turn over if I have a choice.
The other thing is even though its been mapped for optimax you could still get boost spikes that puts it outside the safe range depending on your boost controller etc etc.
