such as the GGR version, are there any problems fitting to my02 and what about performance... the main reason I am thinking of spending the extra money is to stop the engine check light

No real problems fitting to the MY02. You can't be 100% certain that it will stop the CEL; there's still a chance you'll get the light even with a sports cat in the downpipe. Unlikely if you keep the up-pipe cat, a bit more likely if you decat the up-pipe. And de-catting the up-pipe is well worth doing.
You can stop the check engine light from a full decat with a little box of tricks from various people, if that's your only issue. The one thing that a sports cat can do and a decat can't is keep the emissions legal.

I'm still researching fitting a sports cat downpipe and replacing the up pipe for my 02 WRX.
Just a quick question on this - if the CEL light did come on in with this setup, can it be easily cleared without a trip to the dealer? I can live with it coming on occasionally so long as I can 'switch' it off again.

You can clear minor codes by turning on the ignition, going back one click, ignition on, back one etc 5 times. Then start the car.
This doesn't do a full reset, so learnt correction tables (and full performance) are retained.
