Downpipe info needed...UK turbo.

Evening all, I am considering purchasing a st/steel downpipe for my 96 Turbo wagon.
I currently have a st/steel centre section and backbox that were fitted by the last owner by Subaru.
Bear with me on this but I understand that the exhaust system consists of 3 sections, is this correct and if so, is the downpipe the considered to be 1 of these sections?
What performance gains will I notice with regards to power and response? And, which downpipes would any of you recommend I buy and what price should I expect to pay?

There are indeed three section behind the turbo, the downpipe being the one that comes off the turbo.
A good downpipe will make a big reduction to the turbo lag, especially on your 96 with its big TD05 turbo. It will also get the turbo spooled up approx 500rpm sooner when accelerating from rest and as it also aids breathing at the top end, you end up with a much wider torque band.
Real world benefit is that the corner that you have to take in 2nd, can now be taking in 3rd and you will have boost available for the exit, rather than sitting there with not much happening.
