Question

Overthe last week or so I have developed a kind of whirring noise transmitting up the gear box tunnel - seems to be getting louder or it could be I'm just more aware of it.

All gears are working fine, no grinding or apparent syncromesh problems.

Noise gets louder with speed, goes off momentarily when engaging the clutch.

Noise stays on when the clutch is fully in or free wheeling in neutral.

My car is a 94 UK 85k.

Any ideas of what it could be or a possible fix?

Thanks for any advice...

Thanks for the feedback Steve, I'll get that checked as the front nearside tyre has worn down more on the edge than the o/side - then again not sure why the noise goes off momentarilyt when I dip the clutch and release ...

... also reading the archives, seems as though a power steering fault may generate some kind of whining noise and I have noticed some kind of fluid (looks like steering fluid) on the front bonnet that has spurted out the front grill - seems as though it may have boiled?? The area around the filler cap is also wet.

Why does the steering fluid get so hot? How do I drain the steering fluid completely and replace? ?

Could this be the cause? Would the sound really transmit through the gear box tunnel?

Anyone else got any suggestions, much appreciated ...

Cheers

Got the car looked at by 'Rally Colin', diagnosed main bearing in gearbox, replaced and sorted it in an afternoon.

Thanks go to Colin for sorting it so quickly, excellent service and good price too! Highly recommended, Colins' number for anyone else who might need a prolem sorting is 07771 767874.

Colin also did an engine flush and added some 'restorer', engine is silky smoooooth ....

Cheers

It can be quite difficult to diagnose the wheel bearings like that, clean them out and re pack with grease. See if the noise is still there
