a couple of times when starting my MY98 turbo from cold I've had a quite noticeable clicking or knocking noise from the engine. It only seems to happen below about 3-3.5k revs and goes away once the engine is fully up to temp. Is this piston slap? if so what sort of damage is it doing? what do I need to do to have it fixed (I only bought the car recently so I have a subaru warranty)

If it doesn't go away when the engine is warm its not piston slap. It may be bearing damage and you should not use the car until the problem is diagnosed and fixed.

If its piston slap, it will normally disappear within a few minutes of starting up from cold.

yeah it goes away when the engine is warm, what I mean was that I don't seem to have it every time I start the car, only two-three times in the last 3 weeks.

Perhaps it's time for an oil change then. Or perhaps you are using too thin an oil.

Cheers,

George.
