difficulty engaging 5th gear
#1
Hi all.
I have an STI5 TypeR and I am finding that over a certain speed (not fully tested yet, but I would aproximate at 50mph) 5th gear is pretty hard to engage and can result in a bit of grinding.
This seems to get worse at higher speeds.
Has anyone experienced this or know of a probable cause.
Thanks

Just wanna add, that I did find a few threads mentioning either the syncro or maybe a loose bolt.
My car is a Jap import, so Subaru UK arn't gonna wanna know.
It is under warranty however.
Nobody ever replied to these threads though to say what the problem was and if they fixed it.
Heres your chance

Hi mate,
Suffering from a notchy box and 5th gear popping out under decelleration.
Dealer diagnosed the loose nut thing and am getting it sorted on monday under warranty along with a new clutch and flywheel (which is nice).
Presuming your car has an aftermarket warranty, you should still be able to claim and IIRC there was a chap who did the same in one of the threads I read.
Try an search on '5th gear jumping' from about 1999 and you'll get loads of threads on it. here's mine.

Gedi, Had the same problem with my STI5 Type R when it was new.
I bought mine in cyprus and luckily for me i noticed it while i was out there for a week when i went over to get it.
It would crunch a bit if you tried to select 5th over 4000 - 4500rpm.
Took it back to the dealer and he said although the car wouldn't be covered in the UK, he would honour the warranty as i noticed it in cyprus.
Got the car shipped over to the uk and dealer paid for a garage to do the work over here. Pretty good service if you ask me.
Only thing is that was 2 years ago and now my 4th gear syncro has gone. So i will wait for a few more mods to be done then get a nice Lateral performance gear set.
As for your problem i was told that it is a common fault and the way to fix it was to fit the stronger ratio from the ver 4 cars.
Let us know how you get on.
Mel.
