Running fine (!!!!) on knackered MAF......until ECU reset.....
#1
Just a warning really. Recently changed a clutch and in the process had to remove battery. Result - reset ECU and poor idle (1100 - 200rpm). Thought we had left a hose etc off but no, new MAF sorted it. The old MAF was not touched/hit/messed with while doing the g`box.......
So I assume the ECU had adapted to a drifting MAF but could not cope once `learning` deleted.
New MAF, car feels much nicer.....BIG worry really, only symptom was a very slight misfire at idle (every so often) and nothing else. No error codes either!

Thats exactly the symptoms I had a couple of weeks ago after cluch change
However my engine let go big style when giving it some beans.
Over £6000 later
Do you think I should have waited till ECU had sorted itself out..........YEEEEESSSSS!!!

Leaner & leaner then bang
One of the best 'safety' mods on a MY99/00 if you ask me is to change the MAF for the 'new & improved' MAF which is much tougher. £70 (or whatever) well spent.

How can you tell the MAF's failed or failing (even if you've just spent £70 on a new one)?
Wouldn't a Lambda/AFR monitor tell you if the car was starting run dangerously lean?
Is Scoobynet paranoia our best line of defense?

I've Got the new MAF fitted with another as spare.
Took the opportunity to fit HKS FMIC while engine/Turbo being
replaced
The downside to this was.Had to fit induction kit
K+N 57i wouldn't fit. So now have a
Blitz induction kit...Oh dear I can hear you groan MAF killer!
Hopefully getting SECS unit fitted. When they arrive(I think they have a MAF read function.
Heres to PARANOIA BIG STYLE.
PIck up car tommorow.
Fingers crossed.

New MAF part No.METER CP-AIR FLOW 22794AA010
That is the standard old one
Or at least I ordered that part from this thread which as you can see was quite a while ago
This is the old thread with same part no on it
I got all excited there for a minute

Car is generally running a bit `nicer` now. Idle in particular is velvet smooth. Coming on-boost feels a bit more torquey as well........
Considereing I`m running around the 320/330PS mark, lean fuelling is even more of a concern.........

I wish I had shares in Bosch. I'd be rubbing my hands in glee with all the Bosch knock sensors and MAF sensors rolling off the production line
So, if your car has lumpy idle we should all run out and spend £70 or is there a more scientific way of checking rather than wetting my finger and sticking it in the air?
JB, did you not suggest before that a Lambda/AFR monitor would indicate a failing MAF?

The night rider effect shows the car running in closed-loop. If that stops working, it's a good sign that your O2 sensor is gubbed. When mine went faulty it just flatlined at 0.3v

Just a note - it's better to have the AFR meter set up before things are possibly going wrong, otherwise you don't know if the AFR's wired up badly or the MAF is actually failing...

If you don't have Lamda/knocklink etc how would you know if your MAF sensor was faulty? would a check engine light come on?
