I wrapped mine and bought it from www.proven-products.co.uk

10metres of 50mm thick stuff.. cost was £21.45 including delivery

Quietens down the exhaust noise in the cabin as well as the heat proofing.. etc.. more pops and bangs too..

definatly reduces noise. turbo spool up is a lot quieter but still noticable - specially with the window down. & pops & bang -

Doesnt the air flow through the scoop over (and around) the IC and down over the down-pipe therefore removing the heat rather than insulating it in ? Just a thought ?

So in essence, wraping the down-pipe may be onother one to reduce likelihood of det?

At idle yes, at speed - questionable.

i get u - and seeing as knocking generally occurs at speed!!

However - youve been driving hard and come to a standstill for a short while. Heat from the down pipe now starts to cook your intercooler. You take off again and your intercooler has now turned into an interwarmer and boom!!! what do you think?

Scoobs only build full boost end 2nd or even only in 3rd So, the question is - does the IC etc cool enough and remove enough heat soak OR not... Also, how much of the down pipe heat gets to
the IC and home much is hidden behind the turbo, behing the
heat shield. I guess the only way to know would be to test with a
heat probe b4 and after wrapping, under very similar test conditions. Hows about heat refecting powder coating the turbo and down pipe... wonder if thats possible.

Definately wrap it.... and put the turbo heat shield on. For the cost of the wrap why not? YOu can basically touch a hot downpipe with wrap on.... try that without any wrap and you'll see the benefits. Forget about testing with heat probes etc.... the stuff only cost £20 .

Murray.... powder coating??? Why not ceramic coat them like the wrc cars?

Thats whay I meant. Ceramic coat - powder coat - same thing ?
I believe its a process where a powder is applied and then baked on.

I'm going to get some of that expanded foam stuff from Wickes, the stuff for hot water pipes. It only costs about £5, and I'm sure it'll do the trick:

Where can you buy wrap, and what's it called, and how does it fix, and how difficult is it to do??

JGM above has given a link for wrap Alcazar, you just soak it in water and then wind it around the pipe with an overlap. You can secure it with jubilee clips. Best to wear a mask since there is a cloud of fibreglass fibres even though the tape is wet.

Unhappy

IIRC, the main benefit is it moves heat away/out from the engine bay and to a 'cooler' place. I use the stuff on my Lotus 7 kit car as these suffer mega bad heat retention...same for scoobies, but the only thing to bear in mind is the heat HAS to go somewhere, so wherever it is released, make sure your not just moving the problem to somewhere else just as heat sensitive

Of course....my information and understanding could be utter pants and i'm talking outta my butt :-)

Lightbulb

Wrapping the down pipe keeps the hot exhaust gas hotter for longer, hotter gas is thinner (less dense) than cooler gas, so is easier to move, causes less resistance to being pushed out of the exhaust system pipework, hence a heat insuated system (whether it be a coating or wrap) generates less back pressure. "Back pressure is Evil".

Question

So, Mike, do Scoobymania do the stuff too? I looked at that link that JGM posted, and it's gone up by £1 already!! I really can't see why it costs £7 to post the stuff to me.............how heavy can it be? I'd have thought Jiffy bag, and £2 postage tops?

Alzcar,

It is actually quite heavy.. I bought it about 6months or so ago.

Got a photo here somewhere as I took the downpipe off to do the clutch at the weekend..

To the left of the tiny intercooler..

Question

So, does this mean it has to be removed to be wrapped, or just to make a surgical job of it?:

You probably could do with with it installed but I wouldn't recommend it..

If the nuts and bolts come undone okay then it is not bad at all..

If they seize it is a nightmare..

Remove the heatsheild (which usually sheers a bolt or two but not too much of a problem) remove intercooler, undo two bolts of the top of the turbo / down pipe, undo the three nuts of studs around the turbo / down pipe.. undo the connection of the pipe between centre and downpipe.. undo the one remain bolt which holds it to the gear box.. lift it down and out from under the car.. if it has not already fallen on your fingers / head.

REfit is the reversal.. will need to cut the heat shield to get it over the new down pipe.

Ive just got a down pipe fitted on my car and wrapped it...

Is it worth wrapping the rest of the exhaust system...?

I think someone has wrapped the centre section but in my opinion no point.. I did think if the wife complained about the in cabin noise then I could wrap it.. but she didn;t complain!?!

The bottom bit of my downpipe that is under the car is starting to fray and go manky where it gets dirt and water spray on it so I think you would end up carrying lots of dirt and when raining water about with you.
