Cool

Had Cross Roads garage fit one of their super home brew down pipes and an STi back box on my MY02 WRX and it's just great! Not stacks and stacks of extra power but the extra pull is superb, well worth the money! :-)

BTW, the service manager took my car on a spin to check it all out and came back saying that the car understeers lots and thought that the set up I've got is worse than the standard WRX. I've had geometry set up by Powerstation and have Eibach springs fitted, plus F1's. I was puzzeled as it feels and handles great to me and am now getting a bit worried as he drives these cars every day and knows how they should be. Is this just a ploy to make me worry and pay them to do stuff to it or is there a way to set geometry to both give good tyre wear and handling?

Anyway, centre de-cat next!

:-)

Any info about the downpipe - cost, what it will fit etc...? It's slowly coming up on my list of required mods...

Thanks

It's one that Cross Roads have developed themselves and is part of a kit that they are doing that they say Pro Drive are interested in. They are doing twin exhaust systems that look superb and sound unreal, but I didn't have a grand spare! I test drove one of those and it was - to me - better than an STi, admittedly, it had also had ecu changes etc. The downpipe was 256 plus vat and fitting, the STi box was, well, better not say, but lets say it was about half the downpipe cost :-)

I'm no expert but when shown various pipes from other makers this one looked much better made. All I can say is that it's made such a difference. I've now got such a grin!

No Leslie, didn't do the bumpsteer mod :-)

BTW, my CEL (check engine light) has come on this afternoon and the standard tricks to re-set made no odds. Suppose this means that I need the thingmy that stops that? I thought that was only needed for the centre de-cat.

Finally, as an update, have covered 100 miles today and the feeling is that not only does the car pull better at junctions etc but the extra power at the top of the rev range is much more than I was expecting! :-)

Cel thingy is required if de-cat down pipe not the center. The sensor is before the centre section cat and therefore you can change the centre section without the Cel fix...

Andy,
When you remove your cats a fault code comes up on your dash telling you basically that your cats are knackered if they were still fitted if you get my drift. All a cel fix does is tricks the diagnostics into thinking that the cats are still there and stops the fault code coming up.You can get them from soobysport about £50 takes 10 mins to wire up.
cheers

I'm well chuffed with my de-cat. I've been dyno'd today at 249bhp and that's with a full decat (including up-pipe) on a MY01. That's up from 225bhp with just a backbox. It seems a lot more though, probably due to the power coming on sooner, staying on longer and being a little noisier.

Steve

Hope you had a good trip to Well Lane, looks like it was worth it !! Nice result. Is there a thread somewhere as to what other cumbrian scoobs did?

Just been driving my MY02 full decat today....is it neant to be that loud or is there a leak ?? do you hear a fluttering sound sometimes??

Midlife...

Funny thing I noticed is that it seems more powerful today than yesterday after collecting it from the garage. Is the ecu adjusting or something? Same fuel.

Question

Can I ask something stupid, if the signal from the rear O2 sensor is low (or high) when the car is decatted how the CEL fix correct this without causing any problem in normal situations (i.e. by changing always the signal it “fools” the ECU when it needs to read the “correct output” from the sensor)?
I suppose “CEL fix” works all the time and keeps the signal between some low and high values but does it affect also normal sensor’s operation; we all know that the more circuits includes an amplifier the less signal to noise ratio it has, right?

Mike

Make sure that they have also changed the boost control restrictor or you will be getting boost spikes on your STi7.

Jim

The car uses a semi wide band lambda in the manifold to determine fuelling and only uses the rear lambda for checking the efficiency of the cats.

Thanks for that Pete! I'm running a MY02 WRX, does that still apply?

Cheers!

Cool

As an update, I did a 320 mile trip from the Cotswolds to Peldon (Essex) and back with a trip in to outer South London blah blah today (and got spotted for the first time). Mixed driving but not slow, motorway 80-90 (cough!) and fun B roads, still have yet to see the yellow light come on! That's fantastic! I reckon the de-cat's extra power and driving flexibility is saving me at least a gallon a tank! I usually get 250-70 miles before the fuel light comes on.

Thing is, the drive is so much more relaxed now. Getting back in to the Sport for my commute will be a real drag now! Hmm, de-cat the Sport?!!!

:-)
