Question

I have an rb5 and lately my front wheels don't seem to be putting any power down. accelerating in any gear, there is a small shuffle at the front and then all the power seems to shift to the rear wheels. Occasionally, while doing this, there is a noise that sounds like an automatic changing gear. So far, I have ruled out tyres, tyre pressure, wheel alignment and suspension. There is a noticeable loss of power across the board, but noticeably in 2nd gear, the revs get to about 4000rpm and then there is no acceleration as the revs rise. any ideas, commiserations etc. gratefully accepted.

Question

You state that there is a rise in revs but not in power?
That sounds more like your clutch is slipping (severely!).
Due to the nature of the AWD system, if you had a faulty diff or the likes you would definately feel it (ie it would either make a racket or your car wouldnt move) so it sounds more like the clutch (but i havnt driven the car so wouldnt know).
Best thing for it is to take the car to either a speciallist or a dealer who can tell you exactly whats up

Does sound like the clutch is slipping.

The auto box noise, does it sound like the gear is changing just as it finaly get the power down?

Try accelerating hard from low revs in 3rd/4th, does it do it then?

Cool

test for clutch slip... highish gear, revs below peak torque (say revs at 2.5K), ideally drive up an incline, floor it and watch the revs and speed rise, do they rise together, or does the rev counter break free and rush off on its own leaving the speedo going nowhere?

The noise does seem to occur just as the power is finally going down. If i put my foot down at low revs, the revs build faster than the speedo and then the auto type noise kicks in and the power finally arrives. When the revs get above 4000 there seems to be a ceiling on the speed. It will get faster, but the noise the engine is making, seems excessive for the speed the engine is making. Obviously, I'm a little reluctant to push it.If this is a case of clutch slip, would the front of the car feel overly light, or might that be something else?

Does sound like the clutch slipping..

Mine has been doing exactly that (hence I am changing the clutch tomorrow) except the noise.. but then the loss of power is a bit like is changing gear I guess..

To start with it felt like I had left my foot on the clutch and was just after changing into 3rd with a lot of throttle.. it was an obvious rev counter increase and speed stayed the same though.

PS: Best quote for having the job done for me was from Rally Colin that posts on this board.. he is in Reading I believe..

Was willing to give advise to fitting it myself too and bought some brake pads off his so, happy to pass on his info as I know he is genuine.

I'll find his email and post it in a bit..
