APS Turbo Back System with 3" high flow cat
#1
Does anyone have and APS Turbo Back System with 3" high flow cat ?
The cat does not have to be swapped every year for MOTs.
It this a good choice ? Any comments or examples ?
Thanks.

I've had one fitted to a MY93 WRX for about a year, went straight through the mot!
Good system, well made, fits well, extra power, more responsive sounds great!

I've got the system, minus the cat (when I got the system, it seemed that the US had bought up all the cats so there weren't any & haven't got round to getting the cat bit yet ).
To me, it's a very good compromise on flow & noise level. The flow is beyond any 2.5" system I've tried (which is quite a few), but the noise level is lower - although I have a rather non-standard exhaust manifold which changes the noise a lot anyway
I'm interested in finding out how much the cat bungs the flow up over the straight-through system! Should find out soon enough too

I have one too. Very happy - 3" system up to the backbox, very similar noise level to the prodrive backbox. Made good figures and unusually wide power band on my MY02 WRX. Got it from JW racing - I highly recommend speaking to Jamie.

Thanks.
They only do a cat replacement or power cat, so how do you put the cat back in place for MOTs? Do you have to refit the entire old system ?
Also still interested in any cost examples you have for your supply and fit.

?
The system has a 'slot' just at the bottom of where the downpipe starts to curve, which either can have an empty bit of tube in it, or a bit of tube with a cat in it. It's probably pretty simple to just swap over when needed, but the single cat does everything needed to pass emission tests.
Or have I missed the question here?

Nom. You said you have the system "minus the cat".
I was originally talking about the APS "turbo back" system.
I presume this "turbo back" system bypasses the first cat AND the second ? Do you just have a cat back one (from 1st cat onwards) ?

Aha. This is bugeye, yes?
Mine's a MY00, so it only had 2 cats in the first place. Well, it didn't actually, it didn't have any when I bought it
For the bugeye, cat 1, in the up-pipe, will still be there, yes. But cat 2 & 3 (downpipe & mid) are replaced by a single, high-flow cat.
If you're talking about a 'classic', there's only 2 cats (both after the turbo) so the cat-back will replace any cat the car had.
Does that help?
I'm getting confoosed!

I have a MY99.
I always thought a CAT BACK was from AFTER the CATS and onwards to the rear. As opposed to a turbo back which was directly from the turbo all the way back to rear.
Cat back HAS CATs.
Turbo back has NO CATS.!!??

Err, well, cat-back would be backbox only, if we're getting fussy! Standard has three pipes after the turbo - the downpipe, centre section & backbox. Downpipe & centre have cats in as standard, the downpipe one being the main one, and the centre section to cover up any leftovers. Removing the centre one only should give no MOT woes whatsoever and minimal power increase; removing the downpipe one only releases quite a bit of power and makes MOTs possible but iffy. Remove both for most noise, most power & no chance of passing an MOT
The APS system replaces all the pipes - they take a slightly different route and are made up of different sections to the standard lengths, so aren't interchangeable, except for the backbox. In the front section (replacement for the downpipe & centre section), you can have a cat fitted, or you can have a blank tube there. The fitted cat is a 'full' cat (unlike the standard centre section one) so should give no problems MOT-time, but it is also larger than the standard cat, making it relatively free-flowing.
I think that's it - can't think of any more detail at the moment! And yes, I am bored, sitting here in the office, waiting for a server to finish its dull job so I can escape...
