Question

'ello all,

I'm looking at various options here and would like to know if anyone has any other ideas.
1 : Get a dip stick version - have been warned that the electronics on the top are fairly fragile.
2 : Get a normal sender unit and get a hole drilled in the block and the sender fitted. Would prefer something that doesn't mess with the block.
3 : Get a version that's built into the sump plug. Have heard of such a version but can't find a supplier.
4 : Get a custom setup made that links in with the sump plug.

I'd like 3 or suggestions on 4. Any other ideas perhaps?

There is a blanked plug above No3 cylinder with access to the oil way which most people use, or as you say get an adapter for the sump plud.

I've gone with the oil way option and depending on the probe thread you may need an adapter for that.

Hope that helps

Cool

I've just bought an adaptor for a Defi probe to go in that position.
It came from Scoobymania, is turned very neatly from alloy, coloured black, and cost £8.

Thanks, problem is that the sender needs to be matched to the gauge and I already have a gauge, need to figure out how/where to get the matching sender to fit in a neat fashion on the car.

OK, understood.
Where did the gauge come from, or what type is it? I would expect that whoever sold it you, or whoever sells/distributes the gauges in the UK would be able to help in telling you where to put it, (ooh-errr missus), and where to get an adaptor.

It's a VDO gauge, fraid the local expertise (South Africa, not UK) is a touch lacking in this regard. Everyone just wants to drill the block or get me to buy the dipstick version. Getting the sender isn't a problem, it's where to put it and how that's the issue.

Don't let them drill the block, there is no need. The adaptor that fits in the blanking plug above number 3 is a Subaru part and is the same part as the adaptor that Subaru use on the OE Oil Pressure sender - you can get these from your local Subaru dealer (presuming your have one?). They are about £8-10.

I'd also not go for the Sump plug as you are likely to see cooler temps than the "real" temps you are more likely to see from No. 3.

Ta,

Matt

Thanks Matt, have ordered one from the local dealer, 2-3 weeks as Subaru head office don't have stock either. Once I get that I'll have a look at how the sender unit can be linked up to it.

Ha!!

That's what I thought too. Then I tried to get the plug above No3 cylinder OUT of it's hole:
I could get an 8mm allen key into the top, but could I heckers like turn it, even with a ring spanner on the end for leverage.
I've gone out today to buy a longer ball ended Allen key with a T_bar top, £8:, (and then it's rained all day )
I'd be interested in how yours came out/didn't?

Speak to Tony Smith at SPA Design Lichfield Road, Tamwoth or Mike Tuckwood at Scoobymania. The SPA guage can be fitted into the bung on the back of the block, below the throttle body and just to the drivers side. Mike may in addition may have a modified oil sump plug bung to take a sender unit but this can be a pain when doing an oil change.
