Question

as above, put my foot on the clutch earlier and it felt soft and the travel was short, basically it wasn't returned properly. It happened for a couple of presses...whats that all about then?

Had any work done on the clutch lately ?? It's a problem that occurs when the clutch has been replaced or the gearbox taken out. lf it continues to occur, you'll need to force the piston right back in the slave cylinder with a big lever and then bleed the clutch through, then release the piston very slowly and steadily back to its operating position by gently pressing the pedal down, maybe twice to get full travel.

It can also occur if the small return spring falls off. If its gone you'll need another one as the clutch doesn't function properly without the silly little spring.

you could also try replacing the master cylinder cos its cheap and easy, and if that fails (as it did on mine, with exactly the same problem as youve got) try attaching a spring to the pedal arm inside the car and run it up to one of the holes under the dash to help the pedal return fully home. worked on mine, much better than main dealers suggestion of whole new pedal box for several hundred notes.

good luck, drop me a line if i can help at all.

Yep sounds like the return spring on the clutch pedal which may have fallen off.

Well mine has done it on and off for ages
I have checked and the spring is fitted! A mechanic freind and I had a play last week and pushed thge piston all the way in and then tried it and it seems to have improved, but it does still stick sometimes.
Going to have to blead it I think

Iain.

Sounds like you may have a leak in the system. Happened in my Evo last week. Poured more liquid in, drove, came back, empty again. Areoquip hose replacement, the standard semi rigid thing had a split in it.

don't know how you'd uprate the spring I had a look (and it is in place) and it's really stern anyway.

My bet is on air in the system.

thanks peeps

JamesWRX you don't need to uprate the return spring - it's especailly designed to be light. The other problem that occurs is that the clevis pin that the pedal pivots on is covered by a plastic bush whch can crack and cause the pedal action to become stiff and uncertain. The part does not appear to be the same between Japanese cars and UK cars, however it might be and that we just got the model years mixed up and model year for model year they're the same.
