I have only had the car a few weeks (MY99 UK Turbo) and I checked the oil today and it is about 1/2 an inch above the top of the two holes on the dipstick

Is this correct as the Notch in the stick indicates maximum although from the manual is says the top of the two holes is maximum??

Or have I got it totally wrong??

I have covered over 1000 miles like this and am a little worries that I may be causing expensive damage.

thanks in advance for any help.

I believe there are two indicators for max level, one when cold and one when hot...

I would suggest you drain some oil out. Top hole is the max, and more than this is not good for seals/oil pressure etc

One problem I had after a previous owner had overfilled the oil was that the car started to surge when accelerating in the higher gears. I had to clean out the wastegate solenoid valve and the other valves on the drivers side strut tower. They had oil in them and were causeing the boost to pulse between 1 and 1.6 Bar

Holes are minimum and maximum for cold. Notch is max when hot due to thermal expension. So, oil level can be above the upper hole when hot.
