Question

Just fitted Autometer AFR gauge to my 95 wrx.

Switched live and earth from stereo connections and signal connection from white wire after the multiplug below the expansion tank.

The gauge does not appear to be working.....just the top rich led stays on constantly. I have left the car idle to warm up and taken it for a run but still the same.....any ideas?

On the signal wire after the multiplug there is an inner and outer plastic cover with wire between....I trimmed away all the dividing wire and then connected to the inner wire....was this right?

I know it isnt much help to you now but when fitting mine i was told that you should take the signal from the ecu end.
It also makes it easier to determine where to connect the wire to.
When i fitted my AFR to my WRX i took the Live from the Ignition, if you take it from the stereo the AFR may get a weak live feed when your radio is up loud.
I also connected the earth to the chassis, this was on advice from a 'tuner' on here.
Signal to White wire with silver stripes on the ecu.
Earth to chassis/battery
Live from Ciggarette lighter (less power drain as it hardly used)

I did test my gauge at first by connecting it to the outer wire by the connector, IIRC the inner wire is an earth which will give full green.

Cheers

Rob

Ok......I think I've tried everything and I'm NORMALLY (ahem ) pretty good at these things but still no joy.

Now as I see it there's 2 possible alternatives here:-

1. Faulty gauge??

2. I've buggered it all up (It's certainly done MY head in today)

Now IF it is alternative No. 2 I'm a little concerned that having cut the lambda sensor signal wire (which is sending nowt to the gauge) what if it's sending nowt to the ecu either ???

Mike Tuckwood....if you're there m8.....come on down or maybe I'll have to come on up and you can sort it once and for all.

Any more advice / words of wisdom / prophecies of doom???

Please....

Right then
Firstly, have you checked that you are getting a voltage at the Gauge?? The AFR gauge is basically just a glorified Volt meter with lights
It may be worth checking this as a start.
Secondly, are you getting Full green with the signal wire disconnected?? ie. just power connections?

i would recommend earthing to the battery as earth to bodywork can produce little fluctuation in voltage that can upset the afr meter.

cheers

I can confirm that earth must go to battery not chassic. I have run with my AFR for around 6 months, reading is OK until I have done 3 to 4 WOT or some minutes with very high speed, then it started to show lean. Yesterday I did the extended groud set up, where I have a solid ground wire from battery to ECU and now my AFR indication no longer change after some WOT

It tells me that a solid ground is an important base for both ECU and AFR

I take all 3 wires from the ECU - Ignition, Ground and Signal. works fine

My earthing mod runs to the point where the ground is connected so in some respect it is linked to the battery.
You will find that the leaning out is due to the lambda heating up, common problem after a few WOT runs..

Thanx for the replies fellas.

I have taken the plunge and will be in Scoobymania tomorrow for 9.30ish...that way it all gets connected into the ecu as it should be ....and who knows what else I might fancy buying while I'm there

Only downside is the fourish hour drive from West Wales but so be it

Cool

BIG thanks to Mike, Sean and Andy in Scoobymania this morning, both for sorting the AFR gauge and supplying me with tea and coffee aplenty

Turns out my botch job with bullet connectors had resulted in no lamba to ecu signal whatsoever....no wonder she used almost a tank of petrol to get there

Thanks again fellas
