I've got a MY96 Type RA.(I think this is irrelevant)
When its cold it splutters and holds back as
though its running out of fuel (its not!)

But as soon as its up to running temerature
its off like a screeeeeming banshee!

I suspect it might have something to
do with a water temp sender unit sending
dodgy info to the ECU.

Anyone got any ideas?

Could be the coil pack(s) have condensation in them. They crack and break down. I had a crack in one of my coil packs. No problems since it was replaced. I had similar problems as you.

Cheers Sith,
Would that not mean the problem would be permanent, coz its not,
it just clears as soon as hit hits normal working temp,
and is no problem till the next morning.
I take the same route to work, and i can pinpoint it to within a few hundred meters of when its gonna clear.

Just for reference approx how much are these coils?

Thanks,
Dave

Most likely time to replace the spark plugs or plug leads if your car has them.

Another thing is the Subaru knock sensor retard the timing too much because they are too sensitive

I am having the same problem at the mo. Just been serviced about a month ago, running PFR7B's gapped to 0.7 (checked them last night). May be the coils but on an MY00 UK I didn't think this would be a problem yet and didn't want to start dishing about £80 for a new set of coils unless needed.

I've just had mine serviced, and as a matter of course i get the same plugs put in, so i dont tink its that.

As for the coils - mine could have gone (its older than yours), but i doubt yours will have.

The thing is, its not intermittent, its every morning up to a certain point/distance. I'd expect with coils or knock sensor
thingamees that it would be all the time.

I Dunno and i await to be corrected!!!!!
Anyone any ideas???

My money is on coil packs - as said earlier.

Pre MY97s are renound for hair-line cracks and misfire due to condensation which clears as soon as car is fully up to temp - thereafter runs perfectly.

Classic symptons IMHO.

I have a 01 WRX, that also struggles when cold - even running up to only 3K rpm. Once the temp guage is at 1/2 way (warmed up) and I give it some, it continues to splutter a bit until its properly warm. I have changed plugs and lambda - so it aint that (may help some). Feels like it stuggles to get going @ 3800rpm and then 5000rpm again. Once warmed up - same thing - goes like **** off a shovel.

01 WRX
PPP Kit
MRT TMIC
MRT Bonnet Scoop
Full Decat
0.95 Bar boost (dropped from PPP's 1.1)
Unichip
Resonator removed.

260ish bhp (est)

I have heard of the knock sensor causing these sort of problems that are explained latter. Here is a site link that explains how you can fix it.

Cheers everyone,
I can get hold of a coil pack. So i'll change each one idividually.
and see what happens.

Submannz,
Not to sure i like the sound of that, the site doesnt tell you what
its doing and why.
I thought the knock sensor has summat to do with timing etc, to
stop detination problems. If this "paper-clip" de-sensitises the sensor
IS that OK????

My coil pack would fix itself when it had warmed up. Not every morning either.

My MY96 also does not like to be driven hard from cold, don't forget that from cold it will be on very rich.

Cheers Sith,

I've never driven any car i've had hard from cold. It's not good for any engine, never mind one that will cost a small fortune if it goes KABOOM!!!

Like i say im gonna give those coils a go.
Thanks

There is a site where they sell you a complete unit but I couldn't find it.

The sensors retard the timming too much because they are picking up other noises when the car is cold and mistaking them for detonation
