Mine has a similar problem. I have a UK MY97, 1st to second is "a bit horrid" when the car is cold, it doesnt make a load crunch noise associated when you dont engage the clutch properly but you feel the friction through the gear stick. It seems much better when fully warmed up but it can still be slightly detected. I've tried adding gear oil additives to "smoothen" gear change without much success, I was wondering if the gear linkage could be adjusted??? Anyone got any ideas??

Yep sounds like a bent selector fork, mine did the same as you explain, it finally broke after a while. They might be able to adjust it out by adding or removing main shaft bearing spacers
