Question

my 95 wrx is noisy when changing down gear, especially 1st and 2nd.it is a whining noise.there is noise present when just driving along too!( technical description or what ;-) )

if i depress the clutch the car rolls along in perfect silence!

would these noises be from the gearbox do you think?

do most scoobies do this? i am on my third one but have never had one with more than 15,000 miles on the clock before as the others were from new.

any help appreciated.

Maybe gearbox bearings, I would have thought you would have still heard the noise with the clutch depressed though. If so it is most likely to be the needle bearing on the drive pinion assembly.

I would say thrust bearing as a second thought

Mine has always wined...

when I bought it with 73,000miles on it and now with 123,000miles, no worse..

I think there is an element of wine in them.. similar to my fourwheel drive radio controlled car funny enough!

How loud is the wine roughly?

Are you sure it is not noise comming through your radio?

It is likely to be your thrust bearing, I put a new one in my car and I think that it now makes more noise.
