Perhaps your engine/gearbox mountings are a bit on the soft side, or maybe even broken.
Although a lot of the bigger exhausts can run close to the rear diff. Dont think its bad fitting, just bad design. Ive also seen a few with a flanged joint in this area too, which seems pretty daft, as it can also foul things.

Mega,
about two thirds of the way down the car towards the rear is a heat/noise shield, i have known exhausts to hit this before and i've had to bend it away from two cars with hipers on...

Well with the help of a brave Lan-Man who layed on the floor while I reversed toward him I've managed to find what's making the noise...
There's a brace that goes across the car underneath just under the drivers door, it's attached by a big bolt either side with what looks like a rubber bush in between.
When the car moves this bar seems to twist and it's knocking on something.
I've a feeling it shouldn't move a s much as it does so I'll have to get the car into a garage to have it checked out.
I'll post pictures of the bit I'm on about later.

Ok, here's the source of the knocking, to check I put the car in reverse and ride the clutch, this bar moves (sorta twists) Its mounting points are either side of the car.
Anyone know what this bit is?, or does?
Cheers

Dont know what it does, but thanks for not running me over!!
I would imagine its to help absorb twist/power through the drive system, to stop your gearbox and engine sort of spinning round like the propshaft.
But hey wtf do I know

I had a knocking noise on my car from that area a few years ago...it turned out that I'd bent the edges up of the bracket shown in the bottom right of your image by jacking the car up there straightened it with a pair of pliers and all was well
Then again it could also be worn carrier bushes, a common issue on Sti Type R's and RA's...when they've been on track or launched hard from a standing start a few times
