Question

What would be involved in doing this? The 50/50 torque split of the P1 is ultimately frustrating and prevents the car from being as great as it could be. I would love to be able to fit the adjustable diff etc, but I think the ABS is an issue. Is this a crazy dream or would it be achievable, relatively easily and cheaply, if you managed to source a stuffed RA or something like that? What would be involved?

Cheers

Suggest you are better posting this thread in drivetrain.

You'd probably be more sensible stripping your P1 and buying a Type-R. Would be cheaper

You could even use your chasis number, buy a new P1 lip and spoiler, buy and Type-R, stick em on and you'd still have money left

If you still wanna do the gearbox, I have a brand new STI gearbox with your final drive ratio in the front diff and a brand new electric centre diff on the back...

DaveR

Thanks for the offer (costs??) but before I make any serious attempt, don't I need to do something else with the rear diff, driveshafts hubs, abs etc?

Err, no, not really. The box will be a dirrect replacement for yours.

You'll need the centre diff control box and leads.

The ABS will be fine as long as you don't have the centre diff lock wound on to lock.

Let me know. The box is competitively priced...

Cool

Dave R,

You seem sure thare will be no problem running DCCD and ABS... have you actually been running the DCCD with ABS on your car? If so, what problems do you find when you wind the difflock on?

Good point Moray,

I guess if the diff was fully locked and you then locked up one wheel (ie all wheels, as the diff is now fully locked) the ABS would release the brakes, so a bit like being on snow.... but then if it's 30%/50%/70% locked will ABS be 30%/50%/70% oversensitive? Or should I just pull the abs fuse?

Anyone know if the diff control unit and assorted wires are hard to come by/expensive and relatively easy to fit?

Exactly. As long as the diff's 'free' and not locked up, the ABS will be fine, if not better than on a UK car as it might produce less locking than the viscous diff. in the zero locking position, in extreme situations...

Just a thought.

Try breakers for the controller.

There's got to be a way of hooking up the hand brake light circuit to take a signal from the ABS - so that when the ABS is activated the DCCD automatically goes into full free mode.

I am thinking a couple of diodes and basic wiring should do it... but I could be way off - I'm no pro when it comes to things like this. Anyone care to debunk my rubbish? <getting the feeling a DCCD equipped Legacy B4 would be nice ).

On the road I only run a max os two clicks on the DCCD and that's only in xtreme wet stuff. Most of the time I run it free, so not really an issue...

Exactly why I posted it in the projects clique first AJbB, but the sphincter police got to it and had me deported to here... That probably explains the largely deafening silence in here

Dave R certainly seems to have lost interest in this thread, mind you, he's still posting things about the DCCD elsewhere.

I guess that I should assume that he doesn't run both ABS and DCCD on his car, and therefore he is not in the position to give me a real world answer on the compatibility isse. Shame.

Yep, shame. Anyway, I heard that Pete Croney has at some point retrofitted an RA box etc into a non DCCD car (I assume that it was the old white RA track car) so I'll have a word with Pete to see what was involved.

Easy Moray. I am still interested! Not seen your comment til now...

No, I don't run DCCD with ABS as my Type R came with DCCD and no ABS. Less weight you see!
Also, as you're all i'm sure, well aware the Type R cannot be reto'ed with ABS due to the different rear axle hubs not having provision for wheel speed sensors, the water spray bottle being in the way of the unit and the whole mayor hassle involved with it.

Much easier to go the other way.

BUT, I have a mate with a UK car running both and as stated, as long as the diff is running no lock, or at least still in the green zone, it's fine...

Cheers
Dave

FATBOY. If its genuine P1 drivetrain, in good condition and you pay all the labour costs, Ill consider straight swapping my TypeR complete drivetrain with you.

Dont know about the Brakes though? TypeR/RA's dont have ABS.

Hi Dave,

Do you have both ABS and DCCD fitted and working happily together on your car?

Moray

Seems then that I'll need to add another feed for the DCCD - one from the brake pedal!! Just another wire...

edit: and another diode?
