Hi people,
Would appreciate your expert opinions. Have just fitted K+N57i and
full de-cat exhaust (HKS downpipe, magnex straight thro' centre and TSL Firestorm b/b). Car sounds fantastic but has developed a flat spot from about 3000-5000rpm, it doesn't seem to pull very hard, as if I am not getting full boost...? After 5000 it really comes on hard. Also getting loads of pops and bangs, this sounds great, but is it a bad sign?
Very gratefull for any replies, am worried I have spoilt my new toy.
cheers,
Rich.

Hi,
Sorry, it is a 1996(N) "mark 1", UK spec, no other mods.

Cheers.

One of the old girls eh

Can't comment or speculate about the flat spot as I have no idea about that side of stuff, however I can say that generally the pops and bangs are normal for a decatted car with an induction kit.
Hope this helps a little

By the way.........ENJOY

Here's a theory, only a theory mind that might be worth considering.
The older scoobs had a larger turbo than the newer ones, this meant that the initial spool up time was longer and if i recall correctly (IIRC) not much happened with these cars below 3300rpm then all hell would break loose as it came "onto boost"
Next time when you get a chance, really have a good look at the rev counter and i reckon you'll see that the "flat spot" is within a much narrower band i.e 3-4k rather than 3-5k
What i am saying is that it might simply be a characteristic of your car which is exaggerated now because of the exhaust and induction mod.
I might be wrong and the explaination might be a bit wooley for some folk but it's only a theory

Going for a blast now....
One thing I can say is that I work for a car supermarket (I know, I know) Service dept though and mine leaves new ones for dead even as it is now!! (To be fair these are new though, ie not run in yet)
One silly thing, how do you use these cool smileys...

Rich - A couple of years ago I installed an HKS induction kit and a full de-cat Mongoose exhaust.

The car basically lost all its ***** below 4 - 4.5k but then totally flew after that.

Could be what Gridlock Mikey said, i,e turbo taking longer to spool up etc

Also, if you haven't had a re-map of whatever chip you're using, it wont be set up for the extra air in and out caused by the less restrictive Induction and exhaust.

If the car is re-mapped for the mods you've done it should restore its low down grunt and sort out your flatspot.

Just re-read your post and I assume that you are just running the standard ECU. I think it may be wise to have something done to sort out your map (i.e a piggy back chip of some sort thats mapped to use your mods)

Cheers
Ben

Stick in the decat/open up the exhaust & the boost rpm goes lower, to a point that the original map isn't 'expecting' there to be any boost, so it doesn't fuel for it. Underfuelling gives the apparent slow-down - all becomes clear with an AFR!
A remap is a good idea - there's some good value ones out there for that MY I think?

Question

Maybe an obvious point but did you reset the ECU?

I have an my96 blitz induction and decat D/P Blitz centre and BB and found after it all being fitted car did not drive as well as I'd hoped. reset the ecu filled with optimax and took for a damn good run and now it runs really well

Ahh...
The famous ECU reset, I have heard of this, is it a Subaru only job? I have heard tell that if you leave the battery off for a couple of days this can do it, any ideas? Beleive it or not I run the service department of a large car supermarket, but no-one knows anything about this type of problem and my diag equipment does just about any other make of car but not Subaru!! Also Shell Optimax, I already use only 98RON super, but should I only use Shell?

Cheers for the replies chaps,
Rich.

I have a SS BB and DP with a blitz/piper hybrid induction honestly all you need is a Dawes (ok and a boost gauge ). my pulls like a train from 3k rpm just do a search or go here

Dizzy, you are a star, link was great. Will definately be trying the dawes and boost gauge, wanted an excuse for that anyway. Also obviously a much cheaper way than chipping if it works (and the theory is good!).
Thankyou very much.

PS: Anyone on how to do the ECU reset...?

Rich.

Ah, that was the thing I was trying to remember
A Dawes won't sort out fuelling (your 'problem'), the ECU will
