What should i purchase first, downpipe or boost controller?

i have got a choice as to my next mod on my MY93 WRX. I have a choice of going for a downpipe as sold on scoobynet shop, or saving up a few more pennies and getting me an electronic boost controller like an AVC-R or Profec-B.
my mods as present are a full S/S magnex (minus downpipe), in car adjustable boost controller (via bleed valve) and a JR panel filter.
these are basic mods i know but i have only had the car a month. i will get both modifications eventually but for now i can only afford the one.
i am in the knowledge that the downpipe is best to get first, however im tempted by the childish side and the pretty lights of the boost controller.
also, as i dont know much about turbo'd cars, i have been given a DV of a renult 5 turbo, baileys piston style. am i right in saying this one fit a scooby (i can get the kit) as it wouldnt have the vacum on it??

didnt realise that magnex done a d/pipe.
also forgot to mention, i can get me a powerchip for £125 so that is another option...
personally im thinking D/pipe, Chip then AVC-R. gotta get a VTA DV at some point aswell...

Sounds like you want is more power with safe reliablity. Well that comes at a price.
If it was me and I was changing the DP for a full decat on a JDM car it would definitely mean a custom remap and probably a Link ECU setup by BRD to run a safe map on optimax.
Its so easy to buy a boost controller and whack the boost up and everything will be okay right up until when things may go wrong. A lot of guys use these but not pushing the envelope and getting small gain others go OTT and hit problems. Some are saved by the ECU cutting when it hit overboost/fuel cut but thats the last line of defence. If you intend going down the EBC/MBC road then at least invest in a set of decent gauges to monitor things so you have half a chance of spotting when something potentially may be going wrong and can back it off.
I havent got the patience to keep playing with boost controllers I would rather get in and drive it so a safely mapped custom ECU would be my way but this is all IMHO <flame suit on>

If you fit an EBC you'll lift the boost but:
a) It'll cost - comparatively lots
b) You need to ensure the ECU's fuel cut is lifted too
Downpipe is a good way forward = better breathing = better spool up - slightly more boost etc. Similar money for a good one.
Would highly recommend you steer clear of super-power-etc chips etc (hopefully someone else will back me up on this - generally they are just fuel cut defenders (not lifters) & bleed valves to raise boost)
For your MY - I'd recommend a cheap ECU upgrade =
Better ignition map
Better fuel map
Raised boost
Raised fuel cut
INHO - best bang for buck - & can be cheper than EBC or Downpipe.

another thing that i could afford, and is cheaper than both the mentioned is a set of cams. i have the engine out at the moment so it wouldnt be hard to fit...
they would be piper cams (as i deal with these through work) and according to the website (www.mongooseexhausts.com) they say a 15BHP increase which seems a bit optimistic...
