ra gearbox ratios
#1
seen rally colin is selling a gearbox with the ra gear ratios, would my car perform better in acceleration with this gearbox fitted or would my money be better spent on stainless headers and water injection for a tek 2,d 99 impreza with catless exhaust??????

check it will match your diff ratios correctly. If its an actual OE type R/RA box, then it will probably run 4.444 final drive... I don't think that your uk car's rear diff would work with this ratio.

I toyed with the idea of doing this last time he advertised it on this board. Somebody was selling a rear diff for about £90 aswell so I nearly went for it but the gearbox was 2 expensive 4 what it was, he might have lowered the price a bit now tho. The other thing is the uk engines don't rev as high as the jap ones so motorway cruising in ra's is harsh as it is so a uk engine probably be unbearable. But you can get 5th replaced for a uk one.

Depends if it's a WRX RA or an STi RA as the diffs are different.
STi RA has a 4.444 diff so you'll need an equally rated rear diff too.
WRX RAs have same gear ratios but either 4.111, 3.9 or 3.545 diffs depending on year.
I've fitted a 4.111 WRX RA box and diff to my UK. It dramatically improves acceleration but motorway cruising is a nightmare.
Out of interest I paid about £550 for box and diff

80mph = over 4000 rpm in 5th
on a 4.444 diff this would be even worse.
You could however, do what I did and have a long 5th put in, which gives you rapid acceleration through the 1st 4 gears then a nice 5th for motorway cruising.
